HANCOCK COUNTY — An Indianapolis man is in serious trouble after law enforcement had to call in the Hancock County Joint Tactical Team (HCJTT) for an incident after a man barricaded himself inside a Cumberland on March 27.

County officials say the man resisted arrest, committed battery and escaped from law enforcement during the incident before ending up in the county jail.

Anthony Dion Wright Jr., 33, 5100 block of Kingman Drive, has been charged with a Level 5 felony count of escape; a Level 6 felony count of battery against a public safety officials; a Level 6 felony count of resisting law enforcement causing bodily injury and a Class A Misdemeanor count of resisting law enforcement-flees.

Wright Jr. made his initial appearance in Hancock County Circuit Court Monday afternoon where officials set a $5,000 cash bond. He’s due back in court Thursday, May 16.

According to a probable cause affidavit, around 2 a.m. March 27, officers with the Cumberland Metropolitan Police Department, were dispatched to Apple Tree Lane for a disturbance between a woman caller and a male, identified as Wright Jr., was possibly intoxicated. Dispatch advised the woman said the disturbance became physical, with the male slapping and spitting in the woman’s face.

Officers were also advised the male was known to have a firearm with him.

When officers arrived, the woman told police she thought Wright Jr. had exited out the backdoor of the residence, the affidavit said. Police did a search but could not find him so they left the area. Officials were called back with information Wright Jr. was back at the residence.

The affidavit stated officials eventually found Wright Jr. trying to escape through a window in the garage. Officials noted in the report Wright Jr. barricaded himself in the garage. The woman then told police she no longer wanted their assistance, however the affidavit states, it was the woman who called police twice, and that at this point, officers were dealing with a barricaded subject who had warrants out for his arrest.

Officials said in the report Wright Jr. was found to have outstanding warrants in Marion and Hendricks counties for a variety of felony charges. Wright Jr.’s records shows he’s facing fraud, auto theft, identity deception, forgery and driving while suspended charges, as well as the charges in Hancock County.

Due to Wright Jr.’s history, officials from Cumberland decided it was time to call in the HCJTT, in order to determine next steps.

Law enforcement said in the report they tried for hours to communicate with Wright Jr. to get him to come out peacefully, but to no avail. After hours of the standoff, HCJTT attempted contact with Wright Jr. by opening the overhead garage door, but could not find him.

A few officers then moved from the perimeter to the upstairs area of the house in case Wright Jr. had made his way through a small attic space just above the garage, and by chance forced his way through drywall to try and escape capture. Officials with HCJTT utilized a flash bang with no response, the report stated.

After completely clearing the garage interior and a vehicle that was parked inside, HCJTT decided to conduct one more interior sweep of the residence at approximately 7 a.m., to insure they did not miss Wright Jr. They checked the pantry and a utility space just off of the garage, and located Wright Jr. hiding in the washer in that room.

Officials say he was then taken into custody and handcuffed. Two different officers were walking Wright Jr. to a police vehicle when he forcefully struck his hands together, causing one of the officer’ s hands to be pinched between the handcuffs, subsequently causing the officer to relinquish control of Wright Jr. who then resisted officers, fleeing on foot, escaping from police custody.

The affidavit said Wright Jr. ran a short distance southwest across the street and into a neighbor’s yard before he was quickly converged on. As he attempted to evade police capture, he was then hit with a taser deployment.

Officials noted, Wright Jr. continued to fight with officers and medical officials, including shouting out profanity and slurs to officers trying to assist medics before he was eventually transported to the county jail.
