A battle between two boys basketball teams unbeaten in Hoosier Heritage Conference play did not turn out to be much of a battle at all.

Mt. Vernon outscored Shelbyville 16-3 in the first quarter and went on to a 72-35 victory, at home, over the Golden Bears Friday.

The Marauders improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the HHC. Shelbyville dropped to 5-2 and 1-1.

Up 29-14 at halftime, Mt. Vernon exploded for a 30-point third quarter, extending its lead to 59-23 heading into the final eight minutes.

Eight Marauders scored and three were in double figures.

Elijah Parra led Mt. Vernon with 17 points. Julien Smith had 16 and Charlie Cross, on four 3-pointers, had 12.

The Marauders hit 11 3-pointers.

Tyler Davis finished with seven points and Brady Fitzgerald added eight. Tanner Teschendorf and R’Mani Wells had five points apiece and Ryker Baer scored four points.

Mt. Vernon returns to action Tuesday for another HHC matchup, traveling to New Castle.

Gizzi scores 31 in New Pal win

Julius Gizzi scored 31 points and New Palestine’s boys basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to earn a 61-60 Hoosier Heritage Conference victory at New Castle Friday.

The Dragons jumped out to a 14-7 first quarter lead, but were outscored 41-32 in the middle two quarter and trailed 48-46 heading into the last stanza.

Gizzi had 21 of his game-high total in the first half. Moses Haynes followed with 10 points and Ben Slagley scored nine, seven in the final quarter. Austin McMahan had four second-half points. Keagan Harrison also had four and Brady Armstrong added three points.

New Palestine (3-1, 1-1) returns to action tonight with a 7:30 p.m. contest at Franklin Central.
