Richard E. “Dick” Basey, age 91, of Fountaintown, passed away Friday, November 24, 2023 at Community East Hospital. He was born in Marion County on February 26, 1932 to Edward E. Basey and Stella (Bennett) Basey. He graduated in 1951 from Morristown High School and went to Indiana Business School. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and received the National Defense Medal. On November 26, 1953, Dick married Delores Ann (Hewitt) in Fountaintown.

For over 43 years, he worked at Hamilton Display as an estimator and retired in 1996. Dick served Shelby County as a township trustee for 24 years. During his retirement, he stayed busy working as a family assistant at Erlewein Mortuary from 1996 to 2016. Dick was a member at Morristown Methodist Church, Morristown Order of the Eastern Star and Morristown Masonic Lodge. He was a former member and longtime Sunday School teacher at Fountaintown United Methodist Church. Dick had many amazing experiences in his life including running in a New York City Marathon, going on an Honor Flight in 2016, playing on a Navy Exhibition basketball team and being aboard the USS Baltimore that represented the United States at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953. In his free time, Dick enjoyed widdling and carving and wood was a master gardener. He loved his family dearly and cherished time spent with his grandchildren.

Dick is survived by his loving daughters, Shannon Jenks and husband, Phillip of Leesburg, IN, Marva Kutz and husband, Jim of Fountaintown and Tamara Wilson and husband, David of Gore, New Zealand; grandchildren, Michael (Laura) Jenks, Laurel (Chris) Davis, Tiffany (Ryan) Beard, Victoria Veach, Hope Wilson, Taylor Wilson and Maxine Wilson; great-grandchildren, Avery, Carter, Kathryn, Annabelle and Jimmie; and brother, Robert E. Basey and wife, Carolyn of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents; Edward and Stella; wife, Delores Basey; brother, James “Bill” Basey; and sister, Ruby Kinder.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary &Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held at the mortuary on Friday, December 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jerri Barrett-Thomas officiating. Military honors will be presented by the United State Navy and the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will follow at Fountaintown Cemetery.
