Weekend Roundup: Big third quarter elevates Royals to road win at Triton

Eastern Hancock’s girls basketball team outscored Triton Central 18-6 in the third quarter, to turn a one-point halftime lead to a double-digit advantage, and defeated the host Tigers 50-41 Saturday.

It was a battle between two of the state’s top Class 2A teams.

Eastern Hancock came in No. 4 in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Class 2A poll. Triton Central is No. 15.

Kenzie Koch and Ruby White led the Royals with 20 points and 18 points, respectively.

They did most of their damage in the second half.

Koch had 12 points in the final two quarter, including eight in the third when she hit a pair of 3-pointers.

White had 16 in the second half and 10 of the Royals 15 fourth-quarter points.

Triton Central’s Maryrose Felling was the game’s leading scorer with 23 points. She scored 16 of her team’s 19 fourth-quarter points.

Eastern Hancock (3-0) is at Union (2-2, 0-1) for the Mid-Eastern Conference opener Tuesday.

Triton Central (1-2) host Monrovia (2-2) Wednesday.

Marauders down Red Devils

Mt. Vernon’s girls basketball team snapped a three-game losing skid with a 53-21 victory over visiting Richmond Saturday.

Ellery Minch had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Kanyonrae Kenny had 11 points and five steals.

Freshman Gabby Thomas had 10 points.

Mt. Vernon (2-3) hosts Westfield (2-1) Tuesday. Richmond (2-2) visits Greenfield-Central (3-1) Tuesday.

Locals win battle of GCs

Greenfield-Central’s girls basketball team built a double-figure lead in the first half and won for the second straight time with a 48-36 win over visiting Guerin Catholic Saturday.

The Cougars led 17-5 at the end of the first quarter and 28-18 at halftime.

Three G-C players scored in double digits. Madison Sonsini had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Chaney Brown scored 12 points and had five assists and Izzy Silcox added 11 points to go with four steals.

Brooklyn McConnell scored eight points.

Greenfield-Central (3-1) welcomes Richmond (2-2) Tuesday. Guerin Catholic (1-2) hosts Hamilton Heights (4-1) Tuesday.

Girls wrestling

New Pal 2nd, G-C 9th in 40-team invite

New Palestine and Greenfield-Central girls wrestling teams had two champions each at Saturday’s Purdue Poly Invitational.

A 40-team invitational, the Dragons placed second and Greenfield-Central, with only six wrestlers, the least of any top 10 finishing school, placed ninth.

New Palestine scored 174 points. First-place Franklin Central had 288. Greenfield-Central scored 99.

June Wagner-Gilbert (135) and Ella Morris (155) were individual champions for the Dragons. Sydney DeLois (125) placed second.

Freshman Asia Bowen (105) and senior Kylie Smith-Foster (110) each picked up first-place finishes for the Cougars. Jasmine Camacho (155) and Ella Harpold (170) both placed third.
