Veterans Day events abound in Hancock County

HANCOCK COUNTY – Several upcoming events will honor local veterans with patriotic songs, free meals, a parade and more.

Since Veterans Day Nov. 11 falls on a Saturday this year, local events to honor those who have served the country span across several days in Hancock County.

Here’s a look at what’s coming and how to get involved:

-The second annual Veterans Parade will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 10, encouraging veterans to join in and the community to watch the route. The parade starts at the Hancock County Fairgrounds, goes down Apple Street past the VFW Post 2693, along Main Street and down State Street past the Hancock County Veterans Park, back along Main Street to Broadway Street. The parade ends at Greenfield-Central High School, concluding with the school’s Veterans Day Celebration at about 2 p.m. in the main gym of 810 N. Broadway St., Greenfield.

-Greenfield-Central schools will host several programs open to all veterans. On Friday, Nov. 10 Greenfield Intermediate School will host a program at 8:30 a.m.; Harris Elementary School, 9:30 a.m.; JB Stephens Elementary School, 1 p.m.; Greenfield-Central High School, 2 p.m.; Greenfield Central Junior High School, 2:30 p.m. On Monday, Nov. 13 Eden Elementary School will host a program at 8:30 a.m.; Maxwell Intermediate School, 9:30 a.m.; and Weston Elementary School, 1 p.m.

-Mt. Vernon schools will host programs open to veterans and their families by invitation only.

-Eastern Hancock Middle/High School will host a Veterans Day program at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10 with grades 6-12 in the main gym.

-Each school in the Southern Hancock district will host its own event for veterans on Friday, Nov. 10. New Palestine High School’s event is at 9 a.m.; New Palestine Junior High School will host a breakfast followed by a program from 7:30-10 a.m.; New Palestine Intermediate School’s program is at 9:30 a.m.; New Palestine Elementary School, 9:15 a.m.; Sugar Creek Elementary School, 2:15 p.m. Brandywine Elementary School will create a recorded tribute and share it.

– VFW Post 2693 will be offering a serve-yourself Soup & Sandwich lunch on Saturdays throughout November to honor veterans. On Nov. 4, 11 and 25, various soups and sandwiches will be served at 11:30 a.m. and will continue until gone. Veterans eat free; guests can join for $6. On Saturday, Nov. 18 Auxiliary Unit 2693 will be offering its traditional Veterans Thanksgiving lunch, including turkey and all the trimmings. Food is served starting at 11:30 a.m. until gone; veterans eat free, guests are $6. The VFW is located at 529 Apple St., Greenfield.

-The Greenfield Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Invite a Veteran To Lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 7 at NineStar Connect, 2243 E. Main St., Greenfield. The event will honor all who have served in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard. Veterans can join for free; non-veteran attendees pay $15. -The Brandywine Creek Daughters of the American Revolution will host the Second Annual Veteran/Military Free Luncheon and Veteran Resource Fair Nov. 10. The event begins at 11 a.m. Nov. 10 with lunch at noon at Park Chapel Christian Church, 1176 E. McKenzie Road, Greenfield. -Greenfield Elks are planning a breakfast free to all veterans from 8-11 a.m. Nov. 11. The event is at the Elks Lodge, 820 S. State St., Greenfield.
