Ribbons, prizes awarded in Riley Festival contests

GREENFIELD – Several local artists, writers and photographers were honored at the Riley Festival.

The Riley Festival board recently announced winners of contests, many of which were on display throughout the four-day festival in downtown Greenfield.

Winners in the written poetry contest were Katherine Beaver, first place eighth grade; Brady Hall, first place adult; Harold Schaefer, second place adult; and Natalie Hoefer, third place adult.

The open reading poetry contest winners were Blaire Karsch of Indianapolis, first place; Harold Schaefer of Greenfield, second place; and April Faulkner of Greenfield, third place.

Arts partnership grant winners were Jeff Weiland, art, Greenfield-Central High School; Jenn Tetzlaff, music, Zion Lutheran School; Adam Eaton, music, Eastern Hancock High School; Shannon Dick, STEM and art, Greenfield Central Junior High School; Monica Holden, GCJHS; Laura Salee, GCJHS; and Molly Elsbury, Maxwell Intermediate School.

Mickey McGee won the pumpkin decorating contest for children under 10 years old. Milan Glumac won in the 11-17 age category. Jordan Elzroth won in the over 18 category and also viewer’s choice for pumpkin decorating.

Parade winners were Greenfield Bomber Baseball boosters, first place youth; Indiana Bandits, second place youth; Brandywine Creek Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, first place adult; Bentley’s Buddies and Friends, second place adults.

Several photography awards were also given out: a total of 73 photographers entered the Riley Festival contest displaying 215 photos.

In color, Mitch Carl won the adult category; Laney Cooper won in the intermediate category for ages 13-17; and Lila Marr won in the children’s category for ages 12 and under. In black and white/sepia, Shelley Pike won in the adult contest; Laney Cooper, intermediate; and Cole Unversaw, children’s.

Best of show color award went to Mitch Carl; best of show for black and white went to Shelley Pike.

Chris Williams won the professional division. The sponsor award went to Becky Brannon. Mike Murphy won the president’s award; Laney Cooper, mayor’s award; Brigette Cook Jones, viewers choice; and Landon Schwertfeger won the Philip R. Hollenbaugh award.

Hancock County Extension Homemakers also announced winners of the contests they sponsored in arts/crafts and baking. The Riley Festival Home Arts and Quilt Show gave honors to Sharon Koepper, who won best of show for quilt. Lisa Holzhausen, won the chairman award ribbon and viewer’s choice.

Purple grand champion ribbons went to Jim Webb and Patty Chambers, creative crafts; Linda Vandagriff and Kathy Lusco, needlecrafts; and Sharon Koepper, quilts.

Pink champion ribbons for needlecrafts went to Marcia Douglas, Julie Robertson, Kathy Lusco, Lisa Holzhausen, Linda Vandagriff and Betty Richardson. Pink champion ribbons for creative crafts went to Deb Turley, Joanne Bowen, Marilyn Kramer, Deb Turley, Linda Vandagriff, Lisa Holzhausen and Patty Chambers. Quilt pink champion ribbons went to Sharon Koepper, Cindy Roberts and Lisa Holzhausen.

A total of 28 baked goods were judged in the Baker’s Best competition. Grand champion and pies champion went to Rose Reiser for a honey apple pie. Patricia Aavang won champion for cakes; Bobbie Lawrence, cookies/dessert bars; Linda Parks, yeast breads and quick breads; and Everett Jarvis won champion in the “other” category for an apple bread pudding.
