Prep roundup: Mt. Vernon wins big at Delta Eagle Invitational

Mt. Vernon’s Hannah Hauser led a strong performance from the Marauder girls cross country team at Saturday’s Eagle Invitational.

Mt. Vernon’s girls cross country team had all seven varsity runners place in the top 10 to lead the Marauders to victory in the 14-team Delta Eagle Cross Country Invitational at Taylor Wilderness in Upland.

Mt. Vernon scored 25 points. Leo was second with 57 and Park Tudor placed third with 92.

There were 92 runners in the race.

Mt. Vernon had places three through seven.

Hannah Hauser (19:15.9) led the way followed by Chesnie Willis (19:46.1), Emma Gale (20:23.6), Lillian Quinn (20:36.6), and Julia Iserloth (20:40.8).

Kenydi Russell (20:43.1) and Tenley Benz (20:45) finished ninth and 10th, respectively.

Delta’s Nicki Southerland won the race in 17:43.4.

Mt. Vernon hosts the Mt. Vernon Sectional Saturday.

Dragons win New Palestine Invitational

Led by a first-place finish from Courtney Study, New Palestine’s girls cross country team won Saturday’s New Palestine Invitational.

Study had a winning 5K time of 21:01.50.

The Dragons scored 27 points, followed by Shelbyville (59), Beech Grove (69) and Cascade (73). Bethesda Christian and Lutheran did not have complete teams.

Following Study, Amelia Stone was fifth in 22:09.44. Cami Massari placed sixth in 22:34.41. Addison Uhl added a seventh-place finish in 22:43.90 and Heidi Bloomer finished 14th in 24:15.53.

New Palestine runs in the Mt. Vernon Sectional Saturday.

Johnson 9th at MEC

Eastern Hancock’s Sydney Johnson earned a ninth-place finish at Saturday’s Mid-Eastern Conference race hosted by Blue River Valley High School.

Johnson ran her 5K in 21:21.3. Kaylee Swan was 17th in 23:00.5.

Blue River Valley’s Charlee Gibson won the race in 19:57.3.

Monroe Central won the race with 46 points. Eastern Hancock did not have a team score.

The Royals run in the Mt. Vernon Sectional Saturday.

Boys cross country

Marauders second at Delta Invite

Mt. Vernon placed second of 16 teams, trailing only No. 1 ranked Carmel, at the Delta Eagle Invitational Saturday at Taylor Wilderness in Upland.

Carmel won with 24 points. Mt. Vernon, with all seven varsity runners in the top 17 of team-scoring runners, was second with 47. Norwell was a distant third with 137.

For Mt. Vernon, Colin Strachman finished third in 16:20.8. Cooper Hunziker (16:30.6) and Xaiden Jenson (16:41.6) finished eight and ninth, respectively.

Brayden Strantz grabbed 12th in 16:52.40. The Marauders followed with places 15, 16 and 17 with Caden Cassada (17:01.11), Isaiah Njau (17:04.6) and Austin Baugh (17:06).

Carmel’s Jonah Kaul was the individual champion in 16:13.3.

Mt. Vernon hosts the Mt. Vernon Sectional Saturday.

Cooper leads New Pal to invitational win

New Palestine’s Jake Cooper ran a 5K time of 17:23.35 to win individual honors and the Dragons won the team event, too, in Saturday’s New Palestine Invitational.

New Palestine edged Cascade for the top spot 36 points to 40.

Shelbyville was third with 63 and Beech Grove had 100. Bethesda Christian and Lutheran did not have complete teams.

Following Cooper for the Dragons, Gavin Smith was fifth with a time of 18:18.35. Jacob Collins placed ninth in 18:57.3. Sam Ragsdale finished in 10th place in 19:01.67 and Hayden Flanagan was 15th with a time of 19:37.63.

New Palestine races in the Mt. Vernon Sectional Saturday.

Markley 2nd, Metz 4th at MEC race

Eastern Hancock’s Preston Markley was runner-up in Saturday’s Mid-Eastern Conference boys cross country meet hosted by Blue River Valley High School.

Markley ran his 5K in 16:57.7. Wapahani’s Nick Cook won in 16:21.7.

EH’s Brandon Metz was fourth in 17:17.7. Andrew Metz placed 22nd in 19:17.6 and Caden Powers finished 38th in 20:47.2.

The Royals did not have a team score. Wapahani won the race with 24 points.

Eastern Hancock will run in the Mt. Vernon Sectional Saturday.

Volleyball

Mt. Vernon goes 1-3 at Carmel Invitational

The Mt. Vernon (15-15) volleyball team won one of four matches at Saturday’s Carmel Invitational.

The Marauders defeated Tri-West 2-0, lost to Floyd Central 2-1 and lost to both Brownstown Central and Carmel 2-0.

In the opening match against Brownstown Central, Mt. Vernon lost 26-24, 25-16.

Alivia Morgan had six kills and was part of three blocks. Setter Ava Whitmore had 17 assists and nine digs.

The Marauders followed it with a loss to Floyd Central by set scores of 25-18, 22-25, 15-8.

Easton Wampler had six kills. Sophia Damer and Whitmore each had three service aces. Olivia Johnson was part of two blocks. Aubry Dowling had a team-high 10 digs. Whitmore had seven assists.

Mt. Vernon won its third match over Tri-West, 25-23, 25-19.

Whitimore had 19 assists, four digs and three service aces. Wampler had six kills. Ainsley Baer had four digs.

In the loss to Carmel, the Marauders were defeated by set scores of 25-23, 25-20.

Wampler had six kills and Dowling recorded 10 digs. Whitmore had 14 assists.

Mt. Vernon returns to action 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Greenfield-Central in the quarterfinal round of the Pendleton Heights Sectional.
