FORTVILLE — After sweating out a couple of three-set match victories to claim the program’s first boys tennis sectional title since 2007, Greenfield-Central has cruised to the regional championship.

Winners of the Mt. Vernon Sectional last week, with a 3-2 win over No. 22 Mt. Vernon, the 30th-ranked Cougars made quick work of New Castle in a Tuesday semifinal match of the Mt. Vernon Regional.

Greenfield-Central won 5-0 with five straight-set victories to improve to 20-3 on the season.

The Cougars will face No. 14 Fishers in the regional championship match at 5 p.m. today at Mt. Vernon High School.

Fishers advanced with a victory over Northeastern.

On Tuesday, Greenfield-Central had three matches where opponents won three games or less.

At No. 1 singles, Chris Long won 6-0, 6-2. At No. 1 doubles, CJ Michalek and Luke Sitzman won 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Mateo Molanphy and Nathan Roberts won 6-0, 6-1.

Caden Robertson and Alex Michalek both had relatively close singles matches, but both were able to win in two sets.

Robertson won at No. 2 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Alex Michalek won at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6.

Along with the regional championship, Mt. Vernon’s No. 1 singles player Adam Koon will play today as part of the sectional individual tournament.

Koon qualified after going 2-0 during last week’s team sectional. Koon will play at 5 p.m.
