CARMEL — New Palestine’s girls golf team is in 17th place after Friday’s opening round of the IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals at Prairie View Golf Course.

The Dragons had a first-round score of 383.

There are 18 teams in the event, led by No. 4 Westfield with a 306. The Shamrocks have a one-stroke lead over top-ranked Carmel (307).

New Palestine is just eight strokes behind No. 14 Bedford North Lawrence and Jasper, the teams currently tied for 14th with 375s. The Dragons are only two shots back of 16th-place No. 19 Terre Haute South (381). They lead Chesterton (393) by 10 strokes.

Individually, Westfield’s Samantha Brown leads the field with a four-under-par 68. Four players are tied for second with 73s.

For the Dragons, junior Lily Kirchner had the best round of the day. She shot a 94 and is tied for 80th place. Freshman Lauren Deering shot a 95 and is tied for 83rd. Katie Kelley, a sophomore, shot 96 and is tied for 86th spot.

Senior Lauren Appleby finished the day with a 98 and is tied for 94th position. Senior Hanna Beller carded a 101 and is in 98th place.

There are 18 full teams and 111 total golfers in the tournament.

The second and final round gets underway today at 8:30 a.m.

New Palestine’s first tee time is at 10:10 a.m. on Hole No. 10 with Kirchner the first of five Dragons to begin their final round. Beller tees off at 10:20, followed by Appelby at 10:30 a.m., Deering at 10:40 a.m. and Kelley, in the final group of the day, at 10:50 a.m.
