Book sale coming to HCPL
GREENFIELD – The Friends of the Hancock County Public Library will host a gently used book sale Aug. 17–21 in the library’s GBC Community Room in Greenfield. The Friends also offer audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, and video games. Proceeds from the sale fund free concerts and children’s special events at the library.
Friends members may shop their members-only preview sale from 6-7:45 p.m. Aug. 17. Walk-ins can join the non-profit organization at a cost of $15 and shop the preview that night. Pick up a membership form on the Friends’ shelves near the entrance at either library building.
The sale opens to the public from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 19, and 1-3:30 p.m. Aug. 20. Most hardbacks cost $1, and paperbacks cost 50 cents. Children’s books are 50 cents and 25 cents. DVDs, CDs, video games, and audiobooks are $1. Bargain day is 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 21. A standard paper grocery bag full of books sells for $3, a plastic grocery bag for $2.

Cemetery educational program coming up
GREENFIELD – Learn about cemeteries, headstones and how they are designed to leave a lasting legacy in an event coming up at the Hancock County Public Library.
“A Walk in a Cemetery – Genealogy Interest Group” wil be at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the main branch of the library, 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield. Archaeologist Cathy Draeger-Williams will discuss what can be learned from the symbolism on headstones in cemeteries. Draeger-Williams is an archaeologist with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology. Women’s Resource Center to host fundraiser
The Women’s Resource Center will host the Power of the Purse, Putting Your Passion Into Action Fundraiser at 6 p.m. August 24 at Wild Blackberry Farms. The event will feature a silent and live auction with more than 55 silent auction items and five major live auction items, a staged area for pictures with an old farm truck, and a testimonial by one of the center’s “Janes” appearing to tell her story. Author and Founder/CEO of Joy’s House, Tina McIntosh will speak at the event as well.

Bicycle event coming up
GREENFIELD – The Hancock Flat 50 is coming up Aug. 25-26.
The annual event featuring a bicycle ride and festival with music, food and drinks has attracted hundreds of cyclists from across the country since 2016.
The ride is Aug. 26 with festival activities in downtown Greenfield afterward. New this year isa kid/family two-mile ride on the trail to Brandywine Park and back, starting at 6 p.m. Aug. 25. Women Helping Women Gala this fall
GREENFIELD – The Women Helping Women 25th Anniversary Gala is coming up at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at Embassy Suites-Noblesville. The event supports the women’s clinic at Hancock Health, which provides basic health services for under- or uninsured women in Hancock County, including mammograms, ultrasounds and biopsies as well as education, navigation and support services.

Cumberland to host Community Day
CUMBERLAND – The town of Cumberland and its police department will host a Community Day from 3-6 p.m. Aug. 26 in the green space behind town hall.
The event will feature a free cookout, touch-a-truck exhibit, community partners tables, a police agility course for children, and a residents vs. police kickball tournament at 5:30 p.m. Live music will also be throughout the day, as part of the Blues, Beer and BBQ series.
