Sorority donates toward scholarships, school programs

FORTVILLE – Several community service projects were completed or updated this spring by the Alpha Phi Fortville chapter of Psi Iota Xi, a national sorority.

Three $1,000 scholarships were given to Mt. Vernon High School graduates, including Susanna Gates (art), Tatchi Anuuan (literature) and Lukas Hummel (music). The sorority also presented $4,750 to help support the five school buildings in the areas of art, music, literature and the National Honor Society; $500 was given toward the spring musical.

The group donated $1,000 to the Vernon Township Public Library for its summer reading program and $1,500 to Mt. Vernon schools for summer speech programming.

The group’s spring flower sale was a success, with about 900 flower baskets sold.

The sorority met in June at the Kopper Kettle restaurant: Lisa Decker was named president, taking over from Lola Halterman who had served as president for two years. Libby Wyatt was named vice president; Carla Nugent, treasurer; and Crystal Altstadt, secretary. The group welcomed a new member in May: Missy Quiggins of Fortville. Meetings will resume in September, with the fall mum and cheese ball fundraisers.
