Wheeler breaks 34-year old record in 3200 Showcase

Greenfield-Central senior Griffen Wheeler ran a school-record time in the 3200-meter run at Friday’s Carmel 3200 Showcase.

Wheeler finished eighth in his heat and 26th overall with a time of 9:26.28, breaking the mark of 9:34.9 set in 1989 by Gary Holt. In the same heat, G-C’s Chris Ross broke the Holt time with a 9:29.28. He was 13th in the heat and 32nd overall.

Setting the new 3200 standard, Wheeler now owns four outdoor distance records. He currently is tops on the board in the 800, 1600 and 3200 as well as part of the team that holds the record for the 4×800 relay.

Carter Crouch was 56th overall, and ninth in his heat, and not too far from the old record with a time of 9:38.61.

On Saturday, at the Guerin Catholic Invitational, the G-C boys track and field team finished first in the eight-team event. Eastern Hancock placed fifth.

The Cougars won with 139.5 points. Guerin Catholic was second with 127.67. Eastern Hancock scored 58 points.

Ian Jack, Aaron Lee, Michael Runions and Kirk Knecht won the 400 relay in a school-record time of 43.22 seconds.

Individually, Jack won the 100-meter dash in 11.39 seconds. Lee was first in the 200 with a time of 23.45 seconds. Cash Looper won the 110 high hurdles (16.03 seconds) and 300 low hurdles (43.11 seconds). Elliot Ryba won the high jump by clearing 6-feet, 3-inches, for a meet record. Knecht was victorious in the long jump with a leap of 21-feet, 1-inch.

Eastern Hancock’s top finisher was Logan Hoskins. He was third in the shot put with a distance of 42-feet, 6-inches.

Marauders win Chatard Invitational

Mt. Vernon’s boys track and field team won the Chatard Trojan Invitational Friday.

The Marauders won the four-team event handily, scoring over twice as many points as the second place team.

Mt. Vernon finished with 124 points. Mooresville had 60. Chatard was third (40) and Park Tudor (33) fourth.

The Marauders had double individual victories from Andres Langston (400-meter dash, 49.68 seconds; high jump, 6-feet), Tristan Trevino (800, 1:59.89; 1600, 4:28.82), and George Burhenn (110 hurdles, 14.87 seconds; 300 hurdles, 38.92 seconds).

Cam Parsley won the long jump with a distance of 20-feet, 9 ½ inches.

The Marauders also won the 1600 relay (3:23.15) and 3200 relay (8:33.31).

Mt. Vernon is scheduled to compete today at the Noblesville Invitational.

Girls track and field

Cougars win close meet at Guerin

Greenfield-Central edged host Guerin Catholic in a tightly-contested eight-team Guerin Catholic Invitational Saturday.

The Cougars won with a team score of 121 points, three more than the host school. Hamilton Heights was third with 106 and Frankton placed fourth with 101.5. Eastern Hancock earned sixth place with 40.5 points.

For the Cougars, Savannah Lake won the 100-meter dash (12.61 seconds) and 200-meter dash (26.88). She was also the anchor leg on the victorious 4×400 relay team that included Addison Buckley, Jorja Houston and Jalyn Smith (4:25.34).

Madelyn Mies won the pole vault by clearing 8-feet, 6-inches.

Ellie Meyer was Eastern Hancock’s top finisher. She placed third in the high jump with a height of 4-feet, 8-inches.

Eastern Hancock competes in a dual meet today at Richmond. Greenfield-Central is in the Pendleton Heights Invitational today.

Mt. Vernon second at invitational

Mt. Vernon finished second at the Chatard Trojan Invitational Friday.

Chatard won the event with a score of 99. Mt. Vernon finished with 89 points. Mooresville was third with 48 and Park Tudor scored 19.

Marauder winners included Lillian Quinn (400-meter dash, 1:03.57; 3200-meter run, 11:59.57), Khloe Patterson (high jump, 4-feet, 10-inches), and Riley Nielsen (pole vault, 10-feet).

The 3200 relay team won in 10:17.15.

Mt. Vernon is in today’s Pendleton Heights Invitational.

Baseball

New Palestine wins with 9th-inning rally

New Palestine scored five runs in the ninth inning to break a 6-6 tie and defeat host Franklin Central, 11-6, Saturday.

Nolan Cox knocked in the go-ahead run with an RBI-single and earned the victory on the mound.

Ben Morwick had a three-run double in the five-run ninth.

On Monday, New Pal won 7-2, at home, against Knightstown.

Trailing 2-0, the Dragons scored four times in the third inning to take the lead for good.

Chase Ankney, in relief, threw four shutout, no-hit innings.

Offensively, New Palestine was led by Adam Rickey. He went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs scored. Morwick had two RBIs.

The Dragons improved to 8-5 overall and return to Hoosier Heritage Conference play today at Greenfield-Central.

Mt. Vernon defeats Anderson

Mt. Vernon’s baseball team, with a 10-4 win at Anderson Monday, improved to 11-2 on the season.

Konnor Scheidt had three hits, including a home run, and had four RBIs.

Hayden Ford and Nick Heitman had two hits apiece.

Keenan Augustinovicz fanned eight in six innings.

Leaders of the Hoosier Heritage Conference, Mt. Vernon returns to action today with a home game against Pendleton Heights.

Softball

New Pal beats Noblesville

The New Palestine softball team batted around in the first inning, scoring eight runs, and went on to defeat Noblesville 14-4 Monday at New Palestine High School.

Maddie Engle had a first-inning grand slam. Ella Holman had her first varsity home run and Nyla Lewis also had a two-run shot.

The Dragons (8-2, 2-0) return to Hoosier Heritage Conference action today at New Castle.

Mt. Vernon wins big at Delta

Mt. Vernon improved to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 17-2 victory at Delta Monday.

The Marauders jumped out with a 12-run first inning and added four more in the fourth.

Mt. Vernon is back in action today with a home game against Lapel.

Girls tennis

Eastern defeats Tri

Eastern Hancock won all five its girls tennis matches in straight sets and defeated visiting Tri on Monday, 5-0.

In singles, No. 1 Sophie Hardin won 6-3, 6-1. No. 2 Tori Parker won 12 of 13 games in a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Lexi Swauger made it a clean sweep in singles play with a 6-4, 6-1 win.

In doubles action, Savanah Hardin and Mikayla Hardy won 6-1, 6-1. The No. 2 group of Abby Bolding and Sarah Clark won all the games in a 6-0, 6-0 triumph.

Eastern Hancock welcomes Muncie Burris today.

Boys golf

Marauders 9th, Cougars 11th at Spacey Invitational

Mt. Vernon placed ninth and Greenfield-Central’s boys golf team finished 11th of 19 teams at the Bob Spacey Invitational in Noblesville Saturday.

The Cougars were led by Josh Alley with an 83. Tyler Young scored 85. Avery Young added an 87 and Bryce Hasty scored 90.

Noblesville teams took the top two spots. Noblesville Team 2 won with a 328. Noblesville Team 1 had a 320. Greenfield-Central’s team score was 345.

Mt. Vernon shot a 344.

Greenfield-Central hosts Rushville today.

Mt. Vernon hosts Hamilton Southeastern and Lawrence North Thursday.

Dragons play at Martinsville

At Foxcliff Golf Course in Martinsville, New Palestine shot a 369 in the Martinsville Artesian Classic.

Freshman Luke Cofer led New Palestine with a round of 84.

The Dragons compete Thursday at Beech Grove.

Royals fall to Tri

Eastern Hancock’s boys golf team lost 167-190 to Tri at Royal Hylands Golf Course Monday.

Ronnie Johnson led Eastern Hancock with a 46. Jacob Jackson followed with a 47. Zach Stephens shot a career low of 48 and Corey Leece rounded out the scoring with a 49.

The Royals and Union play at Blue River Valley today.

Boys volleyball

NP bounces back for 3-1 win

After dropping the opening set, New Palestine’s boys volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over visiting Shelbyville Monday.

The Dragons won by set scores of 22-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-19.

New Palestine is 8-9 on the season at travels to Whiteland Thursday.
