Baseball roundup: Mt. Vernon wins Bloomington tournament

Mt. Vernon won the Bloomington North tournament and went 2-1 on the weekend to improve to 16-6 on the season.

The Marauders beat host Bloomington North 1-0 Saturday morning.

Jack Peine threw six innings, struck out nine and gave up just three hits. Andrew Boldt got the save, giving up one hit and striking out one in the seventh inning.

Mason Meyer had a hit and scored the lone run in the fifth inning. Hayden Ford had an RBI. Grant Payson and Nathan Criss both had doubles.

Against Carmel, a 12-9 MV win, the Marauders hung on after scoring 10 runs in the second inning.

DJ Scheumann and Meyer each had two RBI. Josh James scored three runs. Gage Blanchard had three hits and scored two runs. Ford had a double, RBI and scored twice. Will Jacobs had a triple and an RBI.

In a 5-4 loss to Lawrence North at Victory Field on Friday, Payson had a home run and two RBI. Ford also drove in two runs.

Gavin Joy had two hits, including a double. Jacobs had two hits with a triple. Criss stole two bases.

Dragons lose 1-0

Jacob Morris threw a three-hitter and struck out 10, but the New Palestine baseball team managed just two hits and no runs in a 1-0 loss to visiting Perry Meridian Friday.

Ben Hirschy and Rigg Mahurin had New Palestine (17-5) hits.

Cougars swept by Guerin

Greenfield-Central’s baseball team dropped a Saturday doubleheader at home against Guerin Catholic.

The Cougars lost 7-3 and 7-1 to drop to 9-11 overall.

In the 7-3 loss, Guerin Catholic turned the game around with a five-run seventh inning.

Kirk Knecht had two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Kyle Oden had a hit and two RBI.

In six innings pitched, Kaden Snodgrass struck out nine and did not give up an earned run.

Brady Johnson had two hits and Shaun McFall scored the lone run in the 7-1 loss.

Eastern drops games to Scecina, Winchester

Eastern Hancock’s baseball team lost 12-5 to Scecina on Friday and lost a doubleheader on the road at Winchester Saturday, 9-5 and 5-0.

Against the Crusaders, Brayden Sullivan, Hayden Rouse and Gavin Jenkins each hit a home run. Jenkins had two RBI. Carson Borden had two hits.

In the 9-4 loss to Winchester, Jenkins had two hits and an RBI. Sullivan had a hit and an RBI and Rouse drove in one run.

In the shutout, the Royals had four hits, one each from Caleb Retherford, Jalen Helderbrand, Chase Stewart and Jenkins.
