On the day prior to the Hancock County Tournament, scheduled to be played today at Mt. Vernon High School, the Mt. Vernon girls tennis team defeated county rival Greenfield-Central 4-1 in a regular-season dual meet Thursday at MV.

Mt. Vernon won two of three singles matches.

At No. 1, Kylie Brandes won 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3, Maria Downs won 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, Kim Joubert and Carmen Lugo won 6-4, 6-2. The No. 2 group of Addy Lockwood and Sophie Maxwell won 6-1, 6-3.

Mt. Vernon is 5-3 on the season and 3-1 in Hoosier Heritage Conference contests.

Mt. Vernon, Greenfield-Central, Eastern Hancock and New Palestine meet today at MVHS for the Hancock County Tournament, slated to start at 5 p.m.

Royals defeat Blue River

Eastern Hancock’s girls tennis team earned a 3-2 victory over Mid-Eastern Conference foe Blue River Valley Thursday.

The Royals swept doubles play with wins from the No. 1 group of Savanah Hardin and Mikayla Hardy, by scores of 6-7 (8-10), 7-5, 6-1, and the No. 2 team of Sarah Clark and Abby Bolding by a count of 6-1, 7-5.

The third Eastern Hancock win came from No. 2 singles player Lexi Swauger, 6-0, 6-2.

The Royals are scheduled to compete in today’s Hancock County Tournament at Mt. Vernon High School.

Girls track and field

Dragons win big over Arabians

New Palestine’s girls track and field team won convincingly in a dual meet, 102-30, over visiting Pendleton Heights Thursday.

Taylor Burke won both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles. Abby Journay was also an individual double-winner, taking the 200 and high jump.

Other individual winners included, Rylee Hurst (100), Lexi Baynes (800), Tylar Whitaker (1600), Cami Massari (3200), Becca Johnson (pole vault), Alaina Doran (long jump), Quin Lumbley (shot put) and Sydney Miller (discus).

Hurst, Burke, Olivia Frank and Journay won the 400 relay. Hurst, Frank, Whitaker and Journay won the 1600 relay.

The Dragons return to action Friday, April 28, at the Zionsville Invitational.

Royals finish second

In a three-team meet at South Decatur, with North Decatur, Eastern Hancock’s girls track and field team placed second Wednesday.

South Decatur won with 72 points. Eastern Hancock had 56 and North Decatur scored 27.

The Royals won three events.

Ellie Meyer won the high jump with a height of 5-feet, 4-inches. Sydney Hayes won the discus with a distance of 90-feet, 7-inches. Kaylee Swan won the 800-meter run in 3:01.

Eastern Hancock is back in action Saturday at the Guerin Catholic Invitational.

Marauders 4th, Cougars 5th

At the Noblesville Invitational, Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central girls track and field teams finished fourth and fifth, respectively, Wednesday.

Mt. Vernon scored 48 points. Greenfield-Central scored 46.

Noblesville won with 129. Homestead was second with 117.5.

Greenfield-Central’s top finishes came from Savannah Lake, Reagan Crouch and Addison Buckley.

Lake was second in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Crouch was runner-up in the 300 hurdles. Buckley was third in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Boys track and field

New Pal wins on Senior Night

The New Palestine boys track and field team edged Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Pendleton Heights 68-64 to win a dual meet on the team’s Senior Night at New Palestine High School Thursday.

The Dragons got individual wins from Isaiah Thacker (100-meter dash, 200-meter dash), Danny Davis (800), Jake Collins (3200) and Sage Halter (pole vault).

They also swept the three relay races (400, 1600 and 3200) with all senior members. The relay groups included, Thacker, Halter, Isaac Poetz, Cody Crawmer, Brendan Tanksley, Connor Lapenta, Eian Roudebush and James O’Dell.

The Dragons return to action Friday, April 28, at the Zionsville Invitational.

Eastern beats Decaturs

In a three-team meet at South Decatur, Eastern Hancock’s boys track and field team defeated both the host school and North Decatur Wednesday.

Eastern Hancock scored 62 points, edging South Decatur by just two points. North Decatur scored 34.

Preston Markley won the 400-meter dash (56 seconds) as well as the 800 (2:20) and 1600 (4:58) runs.

John Henry Gray won the 3200 (11:31).

John Rodriguez-Lemasters was victorious in the 300 hurdles (46.4 seconds).

The team of Dominic Shelby, Aaron Redmon, Garrett Shaw and Mark Kube won the 1600 relay (3:52).

In field events, Logan Hoskins won the shot put (43-feet, 8 ¼ inches).

Eastern Hancock is back in action Saturday at the Guerin Catholic Invitational.

Softball

Royals remain unbeaten in MEC

Eastern Hancock’s softball team improved to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the Mid-Eastern Conference with a 15-3 win at Wapahani Thursday.

Sammie Bolding, Emma Bolding and Brooklyn Willis all had home runs for the Royals.

Eastern Hancock had 20 hits. Emma Bolding, Willis and Cameron Spegal each had three. Sammie Bolding, Kaylee Kline, Emily Hodges, and Grace Stapleton had two-hit nights.

Emma Bolding and Stapleton added doubles. Lilli Ringer hit a triple.

Both Bolding sisters and Spegal had three RBIs each.

Madison Stephens struck out 11 and gave up just one earned run.

Eastern Hancock’s next game is Tuesday, at home, against MEC opponent Daleville.

Cougars lose pitcher’s duel

Madysen Herbert gave up just five hits, one run and struck out six, but Rushville’s pitching stymied the Greenfield-Central softball team in a 1-0 Cougars’ loss on Thursday, at Rushville.

Kristen Wineinger, Makenna Rankin and Katie Muegge had the hits for G-C. Rankin had a triple. Rushville improved to 7-3.

The Cougars are 7-3 on the season, too, and play host to Lutheran today at 5:30 p.m.
