Marauders bounce back from tough loss with conference win at New Castle

After a tough loss to Frankton Tuesday, Mt. Vernon’s softball team bounced back with a 12-1 Hoosier Heritage Conference win at New Castle Wednesday.

The Marauders had 12 hits, Libby Gee-Weiler, Easton Wampler, Shelby Rakosky and Emma Jenkins all had multi-hit games.

Gee-Weiler went 3-for-4 to lead the group. Lexi Beeler had a home run.

Winning pitcher Sophie Ruschhaupt allowed five hits, one run and had one strikeout in three innings pitched. Aubrey Lowe threw the final two innings in relief.

It was a nice follow up from a tough loss on Tuesday.

Against Frankton, the Eagles scored eight runs in the seventh inning to rally and beat Mt. Vernon, 12-9.

The Marauders had nine hits, Amya Gary and Wampler each hit home runs. Wampler went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Tori Jenson suffered the pitching loss, she fanned eight in seven inning and gave up nine hits.

Mt. Vernon (5-6, 1-1) continues HHC play today with a 5:30 p.m. game at New Palestine.

G-C edges Elwood

At Elwood Wednesday, Greenfield-Central’s softball team improved to 7-2 with a 4-3 victory.

The Cougars had just three hits, but all were for extra bases and two were home runs.

Makenna Rankin had a home run and two RBIs. Camille Burelison had a home run. Kristen Wineinger had a double. Addi Herrin and Wineinger also scored runs.

Elwood dropped to 2-3.

Greenfield-Central travels to Rushville today.

Baseball

Royals lose to BRV, Lapel

Eastern Hancock’s baseball team dropped games Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday, in a Mid-Eastern Conference game against Blue River Valley (2-5, 1-2), the Royals lost 15-2.

Carson Borden had a double and an RBI. Caleb Retherford had an RBI. Caleb Johnson had a double. Colton Dishman also had a hit for the Royals.

Johnson and Chase Stewart scored Eastern’s runs.

On Wednesday, the Royals lost a non-conference outing, 5-1, to Lapel (8-2).

Hayden Rouse had a double and scored the lone Royals run.

Dishman, Johnson and Stewart also had hits.

Eastern Hancock (3-7, 1-3) travels to Wapahani (5-4-1, 1-2) for an MEC game today.

Boys golf

New Pal defeats Franklin Central, falls to HSE

At Smock Golf Course Tuesday, New Palestine’s boys golf team defeated Franklin Central 171-173.

Alex Cofer and Luke Cofer led the Dragons. Each shot 41s.

Landon Beaty had a 44 and Josiah Kissel finished with a 45.

Against Hamilton Southeastern, ranked No. 3 in the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association poll, at Hawk’s Tail Wednesday, the Dragons lost 145-171.

Beaty led the Dragons with a 40. Nick Barada shot 43. The Cofers each shot 44.

HSE’s Nate Benson won the meet with a four-under-par 32.

New Palestine plays in the Martinsville Artesian Classic Saturday.

Marauders second of three

At the Players Club Tuesday, Mt. Vernon finished two strokes behind host Yorktown.

The Tigers shot a team score of 159. The Marauders had a 161 and Lapel finished with a 172.

Mt. Vernon travels to Pendleton Heights today.

Royals lose to TC

Eastern Hancock’s boys golf team dropped to 1-4 with a loss to Triton Central Tuesday at Royal Hylands Golf Course.

The Royals lost by a score of 183-204.

Eastern Hancock is back in action today at Muncie Elks Golf Course to take on Wes-Del.

Girls track and field

Dragons defeat Bears

New Palestine’s girls track and field team defeated Lawrence Central Tuesday, 84.33 to 44.67.

Winners for the Dragons included, Rylee Hurst (400-meter dash, 1:02.67), Tylar Whitaker (800, 2:32.75), Camille Massari (1600, 5:49.68), Evelyn Kell (3200, 14:02), Taylor Burke (300 hurdles, 55.32 seconds), Hurst, Olivia Frank, Whitaker, Abby Journay (1600 relay – 4:17.50), Lexi Baynes, Brooke Tanksley, Katie Kelly, Whitaker (3200 relay – 11:18.31), Journay (high jump, 5-feet), Rebecca Johnson (pole vault, 10-feet, 6-inches), Quin Lumbley (shot put, 39-feet, 6 ½ inches) and Sydney Miller (discus, 124-feet, 3-inches).

The Dragons are back in action today with a home meet against Pendleton Heights.

Girls tennis

Dragons win five in straight sets

New Palestine’s girls tennis team defeated Edinburgh 5-0 Tuesday. All five wins were in straight sets.

At No. 1 singles, Olivia Hasenkamp won 6-0, 6-0. No. 2, Mia Knoop won 6-0, 6-1 and Courtney Johnson, playing at No. 3, won 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles play, the No. 1 group of Jo Harvey and Bethany Blachly won 6-3, 6-3. Maddy Potter and Amelia Rojowski won at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0.

The Dragons travel to Yorktown for a Hoosier Heritage Conference match today.

Marauders fall to No. 22 Delta

Against state-ranked Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Delta, Mt. Vernon lost 4-1 to the visiting Eagles Wednesday.

No. 1 singles player Kylie Brandes won 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Kim Joubert and Carmen Lugo lost a three-setter, 0-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Mt. Vernon is 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the HHC. Delta is ranked No. 22 in the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association poll.

The Marauders are back in action today with a home match against Greenfield-Central.

Boys track and field

Dragons drop dual with Bears

New Palestine’s boys track and field team lost 79.5-50.5 to visiting Lawrence Central Tuesday.

The Dragons won five events.

Jake Cooper won the 800-meter run (1:59.83) and 1600 run (4:34.87). Isaac Poetz was victorious in the 3200 (11:17.0). Sage Halter won the pole vault (13-feet).

The 3200 relay team of Charlie Rigsbee, Gavin Smith, Brendan Tanksley and Conner Lapenta won in 8:54.76.

The Dragons are back in action today with a home meet against Pendleton Heights.

Boys volleyball

Dragons drop 5-setter

New Palestine’s boys’ volleyball team dropped a 3-2 match at Herron Tuesday.

The Dragons lost by set scores of 25-22, 28-26, 20-25, 23-25, 18-16.

New Palestine is 6-9 overall and play host to Lutheran today.
