Staff report

They say records are made to be broken, but some just take a little longer than others.

In track and field meets over the weekend, Greenfield-Central and Mt. Vernon boys track and field standouts brushed the dust off lists and added their names to their respective schools’ files of top performances.

Greenfield-Central recorded three new records, two coming in the Bob Potter Field Events Classic Friday and another at the Franklin Central Flashes Showcase.

Mt. Vernon had a new mark set at the Marion Relays.

All four records broken were at least 37-years old.

At the Flashes Showcase, Greenfield-Central distance runner Griffen Wheeler ran 4:18.78 for a full mile and was 4:17.26 in the 1600-meter run breaking a 37-year old school record by two seconds. The former mark for the 1600 was 4:19, recorded in 1986 by Ryan Morris.

Wheeler was second in his heat and 14th overall.

Greenfield-Central junior Kirk Knecht jumped over 22-feet on all four of his long jump attempts at the Potter Classic, including one of 22-feet, 10.5 inches, breaking a 41-year old mark of 22-8.5 set in 1982 by Brian Raney.

G-C junior high jumper Elliot Ryba cleared 6-feet, 9-inches at the event, beating the mark set in 1983 by Chris McKee, who made 6-8.

Both Knecht and Ryba won their events. Ryba’s jump of 6-9 is currently tops in the state.

For Mt. Vernon, George Burhenn broke a 39-year old school record to help lead Mt. Vernon to a victory in Saturday’s Marion Relays.

In the 110-meter high hurdles, Burhenn ran the second fastest time in the state, 14.66 seconds to win the event.

He broke a 39-year old school record that was set in 1984 by Matt Dickerson, who had a time of 14.7 seconds.

Mt. Vernon won the relays with a team score of 132.5 points. Yorktown and South Bend Adams tied for second with 83 points.

Marauder senior distance runner Tristan Trevino was selected MVP of the meet.

Trevino won the 1600-meter run in 4:27.23 and was part of victories in the 1600 and 3200 relays.

Burhenn, Wilbert Jones, Trevino and Andres Langston won the 1600 relay in 3:29.81. Ahmed Saleh, Daylon King, Isaiah Njau and Trevino won the 3200 relay in 8:21.54.

The Marauders won the 400 relay, too, with the team of Ren Davis, Derrick Marble, DJ Johnson and Cameron Parsley, in 44.19 seconds.

Parsley was victorious in the long jump with a distance of 20-feet, 11-inches.

In both the 110 high hurdles and 1600 run, Mt. Vernon had 1-2 finishes. Following Burhenn in the hurdles, Langston was second in 15.07 seconds. In the 1600, Saleh was runner-up in 4:30.39.

Colin Strachman added a second-place finish in the 3200 (10:18.05).

Mt. Vernon’s dual meet with Fishers, scheduled for Monday, was cancelled.

The Marauders are back in action Friday at the Bishop Chatard Invitational.

For Greenfield-Central, the Cougars will be competing in Friday’s Carmel Showcase.
