Cougar bats lead way in win at Delta

Greenfield-Central’s Kirk Knecht had four hits in the Cougars HHC win at Delta Tuesday.

Greenfield-Central banged out 17 hits in a 12-2, five-inning, Hoosier Heritage Conference victory at Delta Tuesday.

The Cougars are 3-0 in HHC play and 5-1-1 overall.

Kirk Knecht had four hits, scored three times and had two RBIs.Andrew Zellers had three hits, 2 RBIs, and scored three times. Landon Brooks added three hits and Jaden Markus had two hits. Connor Sims got the win on the mound for the Cougars.

The teams meet again today at Greenfield-Central.

Royals earn conference win

Eastern Hancock’s baseball team defeated visiting Monroe Central 13-9 in the Mid-Eastern Conference game at Eastern Hancock Tuesday.

The Royals are 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the MEC.

Tied 9-9, the Royals score four times in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Chase Stewart had three hits, two doubles and six RBIs. Jalen Helderbrand scored four runs.

Eastern Hancock travels to Cowan Thursday.

Softball

Dragons stay undefeated

At East Central Tuesday, New Palestine’s softball team defeated the host Trojans, 16-5, in six innings.

With the win, the Dragons improved to 4-0.

New Palestine had at least one run in every inning and had at least two runs in five of its six at-bats.

The Dragons totaled 17 hits.

Aglaia Rudd (three), Allie Blum, Alyssa Mumaw, Paige Ernstes, Reese Rosenbaum and Katie Hirschy all had multi-hit games.

The Dragons hit six home runs, getting one each from Blum, Mumaw, Rudd, Rosenbaum, Hirschy and Maddie Engle.

New Palestine travels to Franklin Central today.

Home runs power Royals

Eastern Hancock had a 10-run second inning in a 16-3 win over Monroe Central in a Mid-Eastern Conference game at Eastern Hancock High School Tuesday.

The Royals are 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the MEC.

Eastern Hancock hit five home runs. Sammie Bolding hit two. Emily Hodges, Brooklyn Willis and Kaylee Kline each had one. Kline had four RBIs. Hodges had three hits.

The Royals host Warren Central today.

Mt. Vernon loses HHC opener

Mt. Vernon lost its Hoosier Heritage Conference opener, 11-0, at Yorktown Tuesday.

The Marauders are 3-3 overall.

Drew Fithian had Mt. Vernon’s only hit.

The Marauders return to action toady with a home game against Connersville.

Girls tennis

Eastern blanks Southwestern

On Monday, the Eastern Hancock girls tennis team defeated Southwestern 5-0.

At No. 1 singles, freshman Sophie Hardin won 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 10-5. Playing for injured Tori Parker, Lexi Swauger won at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Allissa Smithson won by forfeit at No. 3.

In doubles play, the No. 1 group of Savanah Hardin and Mikayla Hardy teamed up for a 6-0, 6-1 win. The No. 2 doubles team of Abby Bolding and Sarah Clark won 6-1, 6-0.

“It was a little bit of a rocky start, but we battled through some obstacles to get our first win under our belts,” Eastern Hancock coach Chris Hardin said. “I look forward to seeing us improve as the season progresses”

Boys golf

Greenfield-Central wins season opener

Greenfield-Central opened its season with wins over New Palestine and Whiteland at Hawk’s Tail of Greenfield Tuesday.

The Cougars’ boys golf team had a team total of 173, five strokes better than second-place New Palestine. Whiteland shot 182.

Tyler Young’s 40 led the Cougars. Avery Young and Bryce Hasty both scored 44. Josh Alley had a 45.

New Palestine’s Alex Cofer was co-medalist with G-C’s Tyler Young, also finishes with a 40.

The Cougars are back in action against Fishers on Wednesday night at Hawks Tail.
