Mt. Vernon’s boys swimming and diving team opened the 2023 portion of the season with a 119-46 victory over visiting Connersville Monday.

The Marauders won 11 of 12 events, including all three relay races.

In the opening competition, the 200-yard medley relay, Ethan Murphy, Eli Webster, Matthew Garey and Xander Allen won in 1:50.13. In the 200 freestyle relay, Murphy, Brady Gray, Webster and Adison Mayes won with a time of 1:36.34. To finish the meet, the 400 freestyle relay team of Garey, Mayes, Allen and Gray won in 3:48.00.

Individually, Murphy and Gray each won two events.

Murphy was victorious in the 200 IM (2:13.23) and 100 butterfly (58.29 seconds). Gray won the 200 freestyle (1:48.58) and the 100 freestyle (49.09 seconds).

Other winners were, Braxton Loy (1-meter diving, 142.60), Mayes (500 freestyle, 5:26.46), Garey (100 backstroke, 56.82 seconds) and Brady Youngs (100 breaststroke, 1:15.56).

On Saturday, the team will compete in the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet at New Palestine.

Boys swimming

Eastern competes at Mooresville

Eastern Hancock’s boys swimming team finished fifth out of seven schools competing at the Thursday Dec. 29 Mooresville Invitational.

The Royals return to the pool today for the Indian Creek Invitational.

Girls swimming

Mt. Vernon beats Connersville to open 2023

Mt. Vernon’s girls swimming and diving team defeated visiting Connersville 116-65 Monday.

The Marauders were victorious in eight of 12 competitions, including a pair of relays.

Catherine Hiner, Calista Smith, Emme Grubbs and Madelyn Meyer won the 200-yard medley relay in 2:06.39. Anna Hiner, Meyer, Grubbs and Smith won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:04.95.

Individually, Anna Hiner and Smith each won two events. Anna Hiner won the 200 freestyle (2:10.53), and 100 freestyle (58.48 seconds). Smith took the top spot on podium with victories in the 500 freestyle (5:50.08) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.48). Grubbs won the 200 IM in 2:32.96. Alayna Walker was the top diver with 158.50 points.

The Marauders will compete in the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet Thursday (diving) and Friday (swimming) at New Palestine.

Royals swim at invitational

Eastern Hancock’s girls swimming team placed fourth out of seven teams at the Mooresville Invitational, held Thursday, Dec. 29.

The team returns to action today at the Indian Creek Invitational.
