New Palestine’s boys basketball team improved to 6-0 with a 77-64 victory over visiting Franklin Central Saturday.

The Dragons had a one-two scoring punch of seniors Ian Stephens and Blaine Nunnally. Both players had 24 points.

Stephens was 7 of 7 from the field, 10 of 13 at the free-throw line and had eight rebounds.

After leading 32-31 at halftime, New Palestine was able to pull away in the fourth period, outscoring the Flashes 26-16.

Along with the big scoring nights from Stephens and Nunnally, Ben Slagley finished with 10 points. Julius Gizzi scored seven. Eian Roudebush and Bryant Nunnally each had six.

New Palestine takes on Indianapolis Metropolitan at 1 p.m. on Dec. 28 in a first round game of the Lebanon Tournament.

Cougars dominate Lawrenceburg

Greenfield-Central’s boys basketball team defeated visiting Lawrenceburg Saturday 55-32 to improve to 6-1 on the season.

The Cougars led 30-17 at halftime, then put the game out of reach by outscoring the Tigers 23-6 in the third period.

Braylon Mullins led Greenfield-Central with 22 points and five rebounds. Dylan Moles scored 16 points and had four assists.

Tyler Kerkhof followed with six points. Other Cougar players in the scoring column were Will DeJarnett (4), Owen Anderson (3), Jake Hinton (2), and Ian Jack (2).

The Cougars return to action Wednesday with a home game against Rushville.

Marauders fall in OT

Mt. Vernon dropped to 3-4 on the season after a 44-41 overtime loss at Southport Saturday.

Julien Smith led the Marauders wiith 19 points, and Luke Ertel dollowed with nine points.

Rounding out the Mt. Vernon scoring was Adam Hackett (6), Tanner Teschendorf (4), Eli Bridenthal (2), and R’Mani Wells (1).

The Marauders, 2-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference, return to league play with a Thursday home game against New Castle.

Girls basketball

Cougars win third straight HHC game

Greenfield-Central won its third straight game, all Hoosier Heritage Conference contests, by defeating Delta 64-39 Saturday afternoon at Dellen Automotive Gymnasium.

The Cougars are 6-6 overall and 3-1 in the HHC. Delta dropped to 4-9 and 1-4.

It was the Cougars highest scoring game of the season. They led from start to finish, taking a 12-4 lead after one quarter, a 27-13 advantage at halftime and 50-31 lead going into the final period.

It was also the fourth straight game the Cougars held an opponent under 40 points.

Aryana Hibbard led the way with 16 points. Brooklyn McConnell scored 13 points and had six assists. Chaney Brown had eight points and 11 rebounds. Katie Holmes scored 10 point and grabbed nine boards.

Kammi Anderson had a pair of 3-pointers and finished with nine points. Taylor Smith and Jalyn Smith each scored four points.

Greenfield-Central is back in action Tuesday with a home game against Connersville.

Boys wrestling

Mt. Vernon falls to Delta

Mt. Vernon’s boys wrestling team dropped a 38-27 decision to visiting Delta on Friday.

The Marauders won five matches, four were by fall. Devin Kendrex (220), Russell Weaver (195), Tristan Trevino (138) and Carson Hill (126) all were victorious with pins. Conner Bayliss (113) won by decision.

The Marauders return to action Dec. 28-29 at the Mishawaka Invitational.

Eastern Hancock places third at Wapahani Raider Rumble

Eastern Hancock’s boys wresting team went 3-2 for a third-place finish at the Wapahani Raider Rumble on Saturday.

The team earned wins over Knightstown, Shenandoah, and Wapahani, but fell to Huntington North and Eastbrook.

Gabe Sotelo (120), Zane Badgley (126), Cameron Volz (132), Gabe Johnson (170), and Joe Hollenbaugh (285) all went 5-0 on the day to earn indivudal weight class championships. Volz was named Wrestler of the Meet.

The Royals are back in action Dec. 29-30 at the Connersville Spartan Classic.

Girls wrestling

Smith-Foster wins division at Jefferson

Scoring 61 points, Greenfield-Central’s girls wrestling team finished 20th out of 52 teams entered in the the Jefferson High School Women’s Classic in Lafayette Saturday.

Kylie Smith-Foster won her 113-pound class division with four victories by fall and finished second in the 113-class champions round.

Ella Harpold placed third in the 170-pound class, going 3-1 on the day with all three wins by fall.

Maddy Reed finished eighth in the 160 category. She had a 2-2 record with both wins by fall.

Greenfield-Central will wrestle in the Penn Invitational on Dec. 28.
