It was quite a birthday present for Greenfield’s Kyle Gibson.

With the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 National League Championship Series win Sunday over the San Diego Padres, Gibson, a veteran major leaguer on the Phillies pitching staff, is going to the World Series for the first time in his 10-year career.

Sunday was Gibson’s 35th birthday.

The Phillies won the best-of-seven series 4-1.

Gibson had 31 appearances as a starting pitcher for the Phillies during the regular season. He has appeared in one postseason game, pitching 1.1 innings of relief Wednesday in Game 2 of the NLCS in San Diego.

He faced six batters and threw 26 pitches. He gave up one hit, struck out one, walked one and had an assist on a putout.

The 6-feet, 6-inch, right-hander, who starred at Greenfield-Central High School and the University of Missouri before being a 2009 first-round draft choice of the Minnesota Twins, has pitched for three clubs in the big leagues. He spent seven seasons with the Twins before pitching one-plus seasons with the Texas Rangers. He was traded to the Phillies in 2021 and is in his first full season in the National League.

During the regular season, Gibson went 10-8 with a 5.05 earned run average.

The Phillies will play the Houston Astros in the World Series. The best-of-seven series begins Friday in Houston.
