Former Greenfield-Central standout Tyler Murphy recently became the all-time leading scorer in men’s soccer at Trine University.

With two goals in a 3-1 victory at Olivet College on Tuesday, Greenfield’s Tyler Murphy became Trine University’s all-time NCAA Division III era leading scorer in men’s soccer.

Murphy, a junior forward, has 29 career goals and 67 total points.

“It’s a dream come true for me to break the record,” Murphy said in a Trine athletics press release. “I have been driven to be successful in my career since the first day I started playing soccer. I owe a thanks to my friends, family and coaches for being by my side during the process and believing in me and my abilities. The Trine men’s soccer team has been nothing short of a second family for me and I would have never been able to accomplish this without them pushing me to be my best every day.”

After entering as a substitute in the 26th minute, Murphy dribbled past the last line of defense for Olivet and avoided a slide tackle with a shot and score from a tough angle from the left side of the net to the right. That goal would give him the most in program history and his later score ended up being the one to put him alone at the top of the points list.

Mundell leads UIndy to fourth straight

Long named All-HCAC

Anderson University junior Megan Long, a New Palestine High School graduate, was named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis team.

Long has collected first-team all-HCAC honors in each of her three years of competition. She went 5-1 in doubles in conference play, going 1-0 at No. 1 doubles and 4-1 at No. 2 doubles. Long also went 3-3 at No. 1 Singles in HCAC action. She was also named HCAC Athlete of the Week this year. In doubles, Long is 9-4 on the season, holding a 2-2 record at No. 1 Doubles and a 7-2 record at No. 2 doubles. Long is currently 5-4 overall in singles, competing entirely at No. 1 singles. Among Anderson career leaders, Long ranks sixth in singles wins (27) and sixth in doubles wins (26).

“Watching Megan evolve in her three years at Anderson is a highlight for me as a coach,” AU tennis coach Matt Moore said in a release provided by the university’s athletics department. “She is a model for navigating the challenges of being a student-athlete. She excels in the classroom and each year progressed up our lineup to be a leader on the court. She is on track to become the winningest player in our program’s history. This is not possible without determination and a commitment to our overall philosophy. She is more than deserving of her third straight all-conference award.”
