In her collegiate debut, Southern Illinois University freshman Ceci Bulmahn tied a freshman school record for kills with 15.

The former Mt. Vernon High School star had 15 kills and 13 digs in SIU’s 3-2 loss to SIU-Edwardsville on Friday. She also had two block assists in the match. Her kill total and dig totals were second on her team.

She had 10 kills and a pair of service aces on Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Grambling.

V. Bulmahn helps get Valpo to 3-0 start

A junior setter at Valparaiso, former Mt. Vernon standout Victoria Bulmahn has helped the Beacons get out to a 3-0 start to their volleyball season.

She had 22 assists and a service ace in the team’s 3-1 season-opening win over Delaware State Friday. In a 3-0 win over Idaho that same day, she had 16 assists, tied for the team-high in digs with nine and added a kill and a service ace.

Bulmahn had 19 assists, seven digs, one service ace and a kill in a 3-1 win Saturday against Youngstown State.

Teammates to opponents

Former Mt. Vernon high school standouts Shay Shipley and Madison Swingle were opponents earlier this month in Cincinnati.

Shipley and Swingle were teammates for the Marauders soccer and basketball teams. They were also doubles partners on Mt. Vernon’s tennis team.

On Aug. 18 at Cincinnati they were on opposite sides in a Northern Kentucky vs. Cincinnati women’s soccer contest.

Shipley, a freshman at NKU, played 42 minutes as a midfielder. Swingle, also a freshman, played 12 minutes as a defender for the Bearcats.

It was the season opener for both teams.

Top tackler Jones earns MSFA honor

For his performance in Taylor University’s season-opening 27-12 victory at Lawrence Tech Saturday, New Palestine’s Aven Jones was named the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Defensive Player of the Week.

Jones had nine tackles, including one sack, 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

A linebacker, Jones led the Trojans in tackles. Jacob Hockett, another New Pal grad and linebacker, was second on the team with eight tackles, including three solos, and a sack.

Hornaday helping G-W

Former Greenfield-Central volleyball standout Morgan Hornaday is the starting setter in her freshman season at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C.

Hornaday, in three matches, has 73 assists, 15 digs, a pair of service aces and one kill.

She had a double-double in her collegiate debut, recording 28 assists and 10 digs in a victory over Saint Francis (PA). She also had a kill in the victory.
