Former Mt. Vernon standout quarterback Gehrig Slunaker had an impressive start to his college football career.

A freshman at Georgetown (Ky.) College, Slunaker, in Thursday’s 42-13 season-opening win at Kentucky Christian, came off the bench to complete 9 of 14 passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns.

He also had two carries for six yards.

Georgetown is ranked No. 15 in the NAIA Preseason Poll.

At Mt. Vernon, Slunaker was a three-year starter, helping lead the Marauders to the 2021 Class 4A state championship. Following the title game at Lucas Oil Stadium, he was awarded the Class 4A Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award.

As a senior, he threw for 3,028 yards, completing 147 of 214 passes. He had 34 touchdowns with only five interceptions.

In July, he helped lead the South to a victory in the annual Indiana Football Coaches Association North-South All-Star Game. He was named the game’s MVP after throwing two touchdown passes in a 14-0 win.
