School briefs: Colleges announce honor students

GREENFIELD – Several colleges and universities recently announced students with Hancock County ties that achieved Dean’s List based on high academic performance in the fall semester.

Brandon Jenkins of Fortville achieved Dean’s List at Franklin College.

Thomas Niemeier of New Palestine achieved Dean’s List at Wabash College.

Olivet Nazarene University’s Dean’s List students included Stephanie Clark of Greenfield, Kaylee Gephart of Indianapolis, Tiffany Going of New Palestine, Kaylee Walden of Greenfield and Jaici Wright of Fortville.

Southern New Hampshire University announced two academic lists. Dominque Watson of Greenfield, Paul Hood of Greenfield achieved Dean’s List for achieving a 3.5 to 3.69 grade point average. Local students that made the President’s List at SNHU, designated by earning a 3.7 or higher GPA, were Steven Coffin of Greenfield, Andrea Patton of New Palestine, Samantha Barker of New Palestine, Evan Lawry of Greenfield, and Jonathon Hall of Fortville.

St. Michaels preschool to host open house

GREENFIELD – An open house for the preschool program at St. Michael’s Catholic School is tentatively scheduled for noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31. The event may be rescheduled due to health concerns; interested families may view information at school-stmichaelsgrfld.org, email [email protected] or call (317) 462-2380.

Teacher scholarships, stipends available

INDIANAPOLIS – Students have until Jan. 31 to apply for $7,500 scholarships and other teaching stipends.

Students in high school or college who are planning to teach or work in school administration in Indiana are eligible for the scholarships and stipends. Applications are at ScholarTrack.IN.gov.

Donkey basketball returns to EH

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Eastern Hancock’s traditional Donkey Basketball fundraiser will return at 7 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Eastern Hancock High School gym.

Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door; a concession stand featuring local pork burgers will also be available. A silent auction kicks off at 6 p.m. in Room 93.

The event is sponsored by Eastern Hancock FFA. Contact an FFA member or advisor for advance tickets.

Career center open house Thursday

NEW CASTLE — The New Castle Career Center will host an open house for current sophomores and juniors from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27.

Students may visit any of the 17 programs offered by the New Castle Career Center. The Broadcasting Program session will be held at Knightstown High School; Health Careers will be held at Danielson Center, 300 Trojan Lane; EMT will held at 432 Broad St.; Building Trades will be held at their building site, 104 Winchester Drive; the remaining programs will be at New Castle High School, 801 Parkview Drive.

Fortville library offers homeschool group

FORTVILLE – Homeschool families are invited to a Homeschool Hangout Hour the last Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m. beginning Jan. 26 at the Fortville-Vernon Township Public Library. Families can network and find resources for their educational needs; Lego building activities are on hand for children. The library is at 625 E. Broadway St., Fortville.
