FORTVILLE – The Vernon Township Fire Department battled a fire in a detached garage shortly after midnight on Saturday, Jan. 15.

First-responders were called to a home in the 2000 block of West State Road 234 around 12:08 a.m. to find the structure engulfed in flames.

Vernon Township Chief Chad Abel said no one was injured in the fire. The blaze was still under investigation.

The fire department’s two new engines were used for the first time to fight the fire.

“We certainly don’t want fires but I also know our crews were excited to be able to get the first one out of the way with the new trucks,” Abel said. “What a difference good equipment makes.”

Assisted by members of the Buck Creek, Green Township and Fishers fire departments, firefighters were on the scene until around 4 a.m. Saturday morning.
