Prep Roundup: Cougars open new year with win at Greenwood

GREENWOOD — The defending Hoosier Heritage Conference champion Greenfield-Central girls swimming and diving team opened the new year with a 99-84 road win at Greenwood on Tuesday.

The Cougars won five events led by double winners Alyssa Osborn and Norah Johnson.

Osborn finished first in the 200-yard IM, while Johnson was first in the 100 breaststroke. The duo were also part of the Cougars’ 400 free relay.

Rachel Stutz won the 50 free. Ava Jaggers-Rust was first in the diving competition.

The Greenfield-Central boys team lost 105-67 at Greenwood during the boys/girls dual.

The Cougars won three events led by Tyler Swango, who was first in the 100 free and 100 breaststroke. Kien Dalton won the diving competition.

Marauders sink Spartans

The Mt. Vernon girls swimming and diving team kicked past host Connersville to win 89-87 on Monday night. The Marauders’ boys also won big, 134-47.

The complete-team victory for the girls was led by Riley Nielsen and Emma Craig, who finished 1-2 in the diving competition, respectively.

Other individual event winners were: Calista Smith in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Annelise Hiner in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly and Emme Grubbs in the 50 and 100 free.

Hiner, Smith, Grubbs and Ava Crouch teamed to win the 200 medley relay.

The Mt. Vernon boys dominated to take first, second and third in the diving competition behind Braden Thomas, Grant Hoeppner and Braxton Loy, respectively.

The swimmers also had 1-2-3 finishes.

Ethan Murphy won the 100 free ahead of Jack Champion and Brady Youngs. Matthew Garey won the 500 free followed by Caleb Strege and Eli Webster.

Garey also won the 200 free. Brady Gray was first in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. Adison Mayes won the 100 backstroke. Camden Cave won the 100 breaststroke.

Murphy, Garey, Champion and Gray won the 200 medley relay. Mayes, Strege, Cave and Champion won the 200 free relay. Strege, Murphy, Garey and Gray won the 400 free relay.

Wrestling

Dragons finish seventh at Classic

The New Palestine wrestling team finished seventh at the 32-team Mac Taylor Spartan Classic in Connersville last weekend, with six wrestlers placing in the top eight of their respective weight classes.

Senior Juan Camacho advanced to the finals at 285 pounds, where he finished second. The Dragons had four third-place finishers, with Bryce Doss, Porter Keevers, Porter May and Jacob Tweedy both taking home bronze medals. Brandon Brees finished eighth.

Tweedy pinned six of his opponents to win the tournament’s award for most falls.

The Dragons finished with 162 team points. Portage (260) won the tournament, Jasper (212.5) was second and Greenfield-Central (198) took third.

The Dragons were one point back of sixth-place Valparaiso (163). Fishers (171) was fifth, and Daleville (179) was fourth. Eastern Hancock placed 23rd with 65 points.

Cougars take third at Invite

The Greenfield-Central wrestling team finished third at the Mac Taylor Spartan Classic in Connersville this weekend out of 32 competing programs.

The event is named after the late Mac Taylor, who set a national record with 221 wins in 1996 and coached at Connersville for six seasons.

The Cougars tallied 198 points behind Jasper (212) and tournament winner Portage (260). Greenfield-Central had five wrestlers place fourth or better.

Josh VanOsdol (152 pounds) went 4-1 over the two-day event for second place in his weight class. Clay Guenin went 4-1 at 160 for second. Chase Gardner (170) went 5-1 for third.

Brayden Flener (285) was 5-2 and Dakota Herald (126) went 4-2. Both placed fourth in their respective weight classes.
