HANCOCK COUNTY — A Greenfield man who had been sought on a felony warrant since May 2020 was arrested during the weekend in Hancock County.

Jeremy A. Evans, 45, is facing a Level 4 felony count of burglary of a dwelling and a Class A misdemeanor count of theft stemming from an incident in March of 2020.

Hancock County Sheriff’s Department deputies caught up with Evans at a Greenfield address on Christmas Day and booked him into the county jail. Charges were officially filed against Evans on May, 6, 2020, court records show.

According to a probable cause affidavit, deputies were dispatched on March 20, 2020, to the 2000 block of West County Road 300N to check a residence for suspicious activity. A woman who owns the property told officials she lived out of state and that her granddaughter lived there before she died and that she had called Evans to check on her property after there were reports of power outages and damages in the area.

According to the woman, Evans told her there was water damage in her home and the lights were flickering. When the woman asked Evans to show her video evidence of the issues, he refused and became irritated with the woman and the call was disconnected, the affidavit said. The woman then reached out to a friend who went by the house and found the front door open with a vehicle, later identified as Evans’ truck, sitting in the driveway.

Deputies went to the home and found windows had been tampered with, and one had been broken, the affidavit said. When the woman returned to the home in April 2020, she discovered several items packed into totes and could not explain how they had gotten there. A number of items also were missing.

The woman noted there was no water damage in the home, as Evans had claimed, the affidavit said.

Officials tried to contact Evans but were unable to contact him, they said in the affidavit. A case against Evans was opened shortly after. He made an initial appearance Monday, Dec. 27, in Hancock County Superior Court 1. Judge D.J. Davis set a $5,000 cash bond.
