HANCOCK COUNTY — A Hancock County man faces a charge of rape after a woman he’d met online reported she woke up to him conducting a sexual act on her without her consent.

Kurtis Wayne Johnson, 31, was charged with the Level 3 felony.

A probable cause affidavit filed in the case states a female victim from Anderson reported to the Greenfield Police Department in January 2021 that she’d met Johnson on Facebook Dating and that they’d been communicating via Facebook Messenger.

The woman said she went to visit Johnson at his house, which she believed was in the 1100 block of Walnut Street in Greenfield, according to the affidavit. She said she was awake for a couple hours before falling asleep in Johnson’s bed. She woke up as he was performing a sex act on her. The woman told him to stop, the affidavit continues, adding he stopped and moved away from her. She reported she never gave him verbal or implied consent for any sexual contact.

The woman said she waited until Johnson’s roommate returned home and told her what had happened. The roommate’s boyfriend then took the victim home in Anderson. At home, the victim told her father what had happened, and he told her to contact the Anderson Police Department, the affidavit states. She made a report to that department and went to a hospital to have a sexual assault evaluation conducted.

Police made several attempts to contact Johnson but all were unsuccessful, according to the affidavit.

Johnson was booked into the Hancock County Jail on Wednesday, Oct. 13, and pleaded not guilty at his initial hearing in Hancock County Circuit Court later in the day. Judge Scott Sirk set a $15,000 cash bond and appointed a public defender. Johnson remained in the Hancock County Jail as of the Daily Reporter’s deadline Thursday. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Dec. 2.
