Prep Roundup: Marauders prevail on senior night

FORTVILLE — The Mt. Vernon boys soccer team bounced back on Tuesday with a 4-2 victory over visiting Muncie Burris on senior night.

The win improved the Marauders season record to 8-6 overall.

Mt. Vernon came out strong, scoring three goals in the first half and another in the second half to build an early 3-0 halftime advantage.

Senior Tyler Webb kicked off the scoring with a goal for a 1-0 lead and later assisted sophomore Nick Heitman to make it 2-0.

A goal by senior Jordan Small put the Marauders ahead 3-0 at the break. Brennan La Belle added the fourth goal to put the game out of reach.

The Marauders traveled to Rushville for their regular-season finale on Thursday before facing Connersville on Monday to open sectional play.

Dragons fall to Grizzly Cubs

The New Palestine boys soccer team battled Tuesday night, but dropped a 1-0 road decision at Franklin.

The Dragons’ record moves to 6-9-0 on the season with one regular-season game remaining.

The Dragons generated the first chance of the game when Cohen Wintin slipped a ball forward to Elliott Canova, who chipped the goalkeeper. The ball sailed just over the crossbar.

The host Grizzly Cubs scored with 26:19 left on a counterattack after solid sustained pressure by the Dragons. Goalkeeper Blake Bobrow made a fingertip save on the initial shot, but Franklin was able to find the rebound.

The Dragons nearly had the equalizer late in the game when Ethan Windham drilled a free kick, but it grazed the underside of the crossbar and went straight down.

The Dragons concluded their regular-season schedule on Thursday at home against Pendleton Heights.

Girls Soccer

Dragons fall to Trojans

The New Palestine girls soccer team ended its regular season Wednesday with a 3-0 loss to Class 3A No. 8 Center Grove.

The Dragons battled toe-to-toe with the Trojans. The defensive unit played strongly, allowing only 12 shots while the Dragons’ offense generated eight scoring chances. Maddy Potter earned the team’s hard hat award for her strong defensive play and her ability to join the attack.

The Dragons finish the regular season with a 10-5 record. They open sectional play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Greenfield-Central against the host Cougars.

Volleyball

Dragons fall to Tigers

The New Palestine volleyball team won a set over Yorktown on Tuesday night, but the Class 4A No. 3 Tigers rallied to beat the Dragons, 19-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-9.

Lauren Wilson had a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Reagan Kleiman added 11 kills and Bella Brownfield four. Isabella Gizzi had five kills, 19 assists, nine digs and three aces.

Grace Myers led the defense with 24 digs and six assists. McKaylah Flagle and Trinity Oertel had six digs each.

The Dragons are now 16-3 and 3-2 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.
