NEW CASTLE — The New Palestine tennis team continued its winning ways Wednesday with a 4-1 victory at New Castle.

The doubles teams were first off the courts, as Zayden Stiller/Caleb Davis won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Jackson Havel/Clayton Wesley won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1.

Colin Darley won 6-4, 6-4 in a two-hour match at No. 2 singles. Zach Au won his ninth straight match at No. 3, winning 6-1, 6-4. At No. 1 singles, Ezra Schwier suffered a loss to a top player in the league 6-2, 6-3.

The Dragons are now 12-1 and 5-1 in HHC play.

Mt. Vernon clinches Muterspaugh’s 600th

The Mt. Vernon boys tennis team secured a 3-2 home victory Wednesday night over Bishop Chatard and in the process helped their coach reach a milestone.

With their win, the Marauders improved to 8-5 on the season, while head coach Gabe Muterspaugh netted his 600th career victory, combining both girls and boys totals.

“To all the players over 26 years and 52 seasons combined, you are my heart and soul,” Muterspaugh commented. “Love you all.”

Adam Koon won at No. 1 singles for the Marauders, 6-1, 6-2. Robbie Moore added another point at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4.

Manny Downs locked down the win with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 triumph.

Royals sweep Blue River Valley

The Eastern Hancock boys tennis team rolled past Blue River Valley on Wednesday night.

The Royals swept their way to a 5-0 victory led by Zeke Dixon at No. 1 singles. Dixon won his match in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-0.

Girls Golf

Marauders beat Dragons

The Mt. Vernon girls golf team celebrated senior night in style with a 154-191 win over New Palestine on Tuesday.

Alaina Nugent earned medalist honors with a 33. Meredith Johnson carded a 37. Mackenzie Miner fired a 46 and Kailee Monroe shot a 55.

Zoe Nelson led the Dragons with a 44. Hanna Beller tallied a 48. Ava Hasecuster shot a 49 and Janie Hamilton finished with a 50. Lily Kirchner shot a 56 and Rachel Hamilton had a 63.

Volleyball

Dragons topple host Eagles

The New Palestine volleyball team earned a big Hoosier Heritage Conference road victory Tuesday, beating host Delta, 25-22, 22-25, 25-9, 25-20.

Reagan Kleiman and Lauren Wilson led a strong attack up front. Kleiman had 14 kills, five blocks and four aces. Wilson added 13 kills, five digs and three blocks. Isabella Gizzi quarterbacked the attack with 33 assists, five digs and four kills.

Grace Myers led a strong defensive effort with 15 digs. Trinity Oertel had 11 digs and Honour Mallory nine. Jada Hausz had six digs and five kills.

“It’s awesome to get another conference win,” Dragons coach Kelli Gabehart said. “Delta is a much better team than what their record shows. We struggled to find consistency behind the service line tonight and it kept the sets closer than what they should have been. I am proud of the fight we showed and our will to win gave us momentum when we needed it.”

The Dragons are now 11-1 and 2-0 in the HHC.

Cougars lose to Huskies

The Greenfield-Central volleyball team lost in straight sets to visiting Hamilton Heights on Wednesday.

The Huskies won 25-14, 26-24, 25-21.

Boys Soccer

Dragons fall to Woodmen

The New Palestine boys soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision Tuesday at Greenwood.

The Dragons allowed a goal in the early stages, but goalkeeper Blake Bobrow kept it a 1-0 game into the 30th minute. However, the Woodmen added to their lead in the 36th minute with two goals 24 seconds apart.

After a long lightning delay, the Dragons controlled the second half. Elliott Canova got the Dragons on the board with 29 minutes left with a strong individual effort. The Dragons continued to push, but couldn’t find the equalizer.

The Dragons are now 4-5-0 on the season.

Marauders win in shootout

The Mt. Vernon boys soccer team found a way against visiting Shelbyville.

The host Marauders held a 1-0 lead in the first half and scored another goal in the second, but the Golden Bears tied the game 2-2 after the end of regulation.

Following two overtime periods, the teams went to a penalty-kick shootout. It took 11 kickers to settle the contest, but the Marauders got the win.

The Marauders are now 6-3 on the season and 4-2 in the HHC.

Cross Country

Royals take third at invite

The Eastern Hancock boys cross-country team placed third out of five scoring teams at the New Castle Invitational Tuesday evening with 67 points.

Preston Markley was the top Royal performer with a fourth-place finish. Brandon Metz was 11th, Luke McCartney 14th, Luken Edwards 18th, John Henry Gray 20th and Brandon Cross 27th.

For the Royals girls cross-country team, Olivia Evans had an eighth-place finish, Ashton Willis was 15th and Mia Griesmeyer was 17th.

Mt. Vernon wins Muncie Invite

The Mt. Vernon boys cross-country team won the Muncie Central Invite on Tuesday with 42 points.

Monroe Central followed with 60. Behind the two programs were: Wapahani with 64 and Yorktown with 75.

Leading the Marauders was Austin Rush in second, Joseph Blagrave in third, Sam Wilson in eighth, Reyce Morgan in 13th and rounding out the scoring was Colin Strachman in 16th.

MV had just come off a meet in Mason Ohio Saturday taking fifth out of 36 teams in the larger school division won by Mason, followed by Fishers, Seigal of Tennessee, Centerville then Mt. Vernon.

At that meet Rush led the Marauders in 26th followed by Blagrave and Morgan at 35th and 39th, respectively, in a field of nearly 300.
