GREENFIELD — The Greenfield-Central girls soccer team collected its first win of the season and first Hoosier Heritage Conference victory on Wednesday night.

The host Cougars started out slow, falling behind 2-0 to the visiting Delta Eagles before they rallied back.

The first-half comeback began when Gladys Rodriguez found Cora Bishop for a 25-yard shot that soared over the goalkeeper’s head to cut the deficit 2-1.

Minutes later, Courtney Vaughn placed a perfect corner kick in the box where Sarah Contreraz put the ball into the back of the net to tie the game 2-2.

Delta reclaimed the lead 3-2 prior to halftime, but the Cougars responded with three more second-half goals.

Rodriguez connected with Contreraz for the second, game-tying goal. Vaughn put the Cougars ahead 4-3 with a 27-yard free-kick goal. A Tessa Joyner assist to Rodriguez added the insurance goal.

Marauders fall to Wildcats

The Mt. Vernon boys tennis team dropped to 6-5 on the season with a 4-1 loss at home against Lawrence North on Wednesday night.

“Coach Graham (McMullen) and I challenged these guys from top to bottom to play the Mt. Vernon way. Play with heart, play with passion and play to win,” Muterspaugh said. “It was a giant turnaround from the huge stinker the night before.”
