HANCOCK COUNTY — A reserve officer for the Wilkinson Police Department has resigned after being accused of driving while intoxicated, officials with the town said.

The officer, Brian Hedger, 38, Plainfield, was arrested by deputies in Monroe County around 2 a.m. Monday after officials were alerted to an erratic driver in a Dodge Charger traveling south on Interstate 69, officials said.

The driver was reportedly speeding and weaving all over the roadway in an unmarked police vehicle (not a Wilkinson police car). Hedger has also been identified as being a police officer with the Cadiz Police Department, near New Castle, in Henry County.

According to court records in Monroe County, Hedger has been charged with a Level 6 felony count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated-prior conviction within seven years; and a Class A misdemeanor of resisting law enforcement.

Wilkinson’s chief of police, Dennis Hoppes, said Hedger resigned immediately following his arrest.

“He’s gone,” Hoppes said. “It’s a shame because he was a good officer for us.”

Hedges had been with the Wilkinson department for about four years.
