KNIGHTSTOWN — The Major Hugh Dinwiddie Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) celebrated its 100th anniversary on Saturday, July 24. The Knightstown-based chapter hosted the event at the New Castle Henry County Public Library Auditorium.

Members dressed in colonial period attire, with red, white and blue table decorations and plaques containing names of the members’ Revolutionary War ancestors and patriots buried in Henry County.

A color guard from Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) opened the occasion with a presentation of flags. Chaplain Linda Ashwill led guests in the Pledge of Allegiance. Denise Akers, chapter regent, welcomed the group and recapped anniversary festivities over the past year. Remarks and letters from national and state DAR regents were also read.

Special guests included Martha Barnhart, past national treasurer and state regent who now is the state chair for units overseas; Kay Pike, past continental congress bus director; and Phillip Knight, SAR president. Knight offered congratulations on behalf of the SAR. Members of four other DAR chapters also attended.

Some of the garments were provided by Janet Kreps. Artifacts displayed included a 1922-23 hand-stitched name quilt and the chapter’s charter scrapbooks and programs dating from 1921.
