GREENFIELD — If you think you know all about Hancock County, the Great Hancock Hunt, a socially-distanced scavenger hunt taking place Saturday, June 12, is a great way to test your knowledge.

Hancock County Senior Services is putting on the event as a fundraiser. All teams will need to participate in the event is access to a car and a smartphone. Bringing along a senior citizen is optional, but encouraged.

“It’s our attempt to have a COVID-friendly, family-friendly event,” said Suzanne Derengowski, director of Senior Services.

Participants in the event will receive a link on their smart devices that will provide them with the scavenger hunt’s clues, and they’ll be able to check in throughout the event whenever they complete one of their missions. They’ll be looking for specific locations around the county; answers to trivia questions; and more.

Senior Services wasn’t able to hold its traditional barbeque fundraiser this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so staff decided to design a fundraising event that would provide a fun event with built-in social distancing.

“This is a new kind of event for us,” Derengowski said.

With Senior Services ridership increasing gradually as vaccination continues and COVID-19 numbers remain low, the organization needs to continue raising funds. It’s also looking to hire additional drivers.

During the event, Derengowski said, teams can complete the missions in any order, which should allow them to plot a route that avoids the road construction on State Road 9.

Derengowski said the scavenger hunt will take teams all over Hancock County, which she hopes will allow participants to explore areas of the community they might not visit often as well as provide a reminder that Senior Services provides transportation and other services in every part of the county.

The top three finishers in the event will receive prize packages that include gift cards for local businesses.

The scavenger hunt will begin at 1 p.m. on June 12. Teams will meet at the Senior Services building at 1870 Fields Boulevard in Greenfield to begin the event. The cost of participation will be $20 per team. There’s no limit to how many members a team can include, as long as they can comfortably fit in one car.

Teams will need to sign up ahead of time and can find a link to purchase tickets for the event at Senior Service’s Facebook page at facebook.com/hancock.county.senior.services.
