NEW PALESTINE — A longtime science teacher at New Palestine High School has been named the Southern Hancock schools’ teacher of the year.
Darlene Seifert, who was recently honored with a distinguished alumni award from the school district, was named the district’s top educator from among nominees from all the district’s buildings.
The other nominees were:
Brandywine Elementary: Michelle Russell, special education
New Palestine Elementary: Olivia Johnson, kindergarten; Kelly Neumeister, first grade; Rebecca Crull, second grade; Teri Oliver, third grade; and Cathy Purciful, fourth grade
Sugar Creek Elementary: Daleen Kleiman, first grade
New Palestine Intermediate: April Manning, sixth grade
New Palestine Junior High, Kandice Murphy, social studies
District officials also have released a list of staffers and teachers who have announced their retirements: Kim Romeril, third-grade teacher at Sugar Creek Elementary; Angela Hornsby, special-education teacher at New Palestine Junior High; John Cook, Brenda Donner and Mary Price from the custodial staff; Orlyn Mogler, maintenance; and Kay Merrill transportation.
