PREP ROUNDUP: Top-ranked Dragons win 23rd straight, remain unbeaten

NEW PALESTINE — The top-ranked Class 4A New Palestine Dragons refuse to lose.

The Dragons pushed their record to 23-0 on Wednesday night, defeating host 4A Fishers 8-2 behind a 17-hit attack.

Eight different Dragons recorded at least one hit, including a trio of doubles with a pair going to senior Kinsey Mitchell.

Mitchell finished 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs scored and two RBI. Senior Lexi Campbell went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Junior Alaina Miller was a flawless 4-for-4 with a run and three RBI.

Freshman Allie Blum drove in another run to cap her 2-for-4 day, which also included a run scored.

Senior Kendal Calvert was 2-for-4 with a run, senior Vivian Long went 1-for-1, junior Grace Paquette finished 1-for-2 and freshman Reese Rosenbaum was 1-for-1.

The Dragons 5-1 after three innings and went up 7-1 after four complete innings.

The pitching win went to senior Sam Booe, who threw 4.0 innings of three-hit softball with two walks and one strikeout. Junior Katie Kottlowski went 3.0 innings with two walks, three hits allowed and a strikeout.

On Tuesday night, the Dragons picked up win No. 22 when Booe provided the perfect punctuation mark to the Dragons’ senior night victory over Connersville.

Booe pitched a perfect game, retiring all 15 batters she faced in a 12-0, five-inning victory.

Booe struck out eight batters. She induced four groundouts and three flyouts, with only one ball leaving the infield. She struck out the final batter looking to end the game, recording at least one strikeout in each inning.

The Dragons did all their damage early, scoring four times in the first, twice in the second and six runs in the third.

Alexa Holman was 3-for-3 with two runs, a double and three RBI. Aglaia Rudd was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Mitchell was 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Miller was also 1-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Campbell doubled and drove in a run. Paquette singled, scored and drove in a run. Calvert had a triple and two runs scored. Booe had a double and two RBI. The Dragons tallied 11 hits in the contest.

Prior to the game, New Palestine honored seniors Booe, Calvert, Campbell, Long and Mitchell.

Tennis

Cougars beat Arabians

The Greenfield-Central girls tennis team defeated Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Pendleton Heights on the road Tuesday, 4-1.

The victory improved the Cougars’ HHC record to 4-3.

Greenfield-Central amassed their points with a doubles sweep and two key wins in singles play.

Jaclyn Layton secured a singles team point with a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Brianna McConnell added another by prevailing 6-2, 3-6, 10-8.

Ali Knecht and Hallie Smith teamed to win 6-1, 6-2 for the Cougars. Leah Puckett and Makayla Price nailed down their doubles match 6-2, 6-1.

The Cougars return to the courts today at Blue River Valley.

Royals fall to Mohawks

The Eastern Hancock girls tennis team lost to visiting Waldron, 4-1, on Tuesday night.

The defeat dropped the Royals’ record to 4-4.

Eastern Hancock secured its team point at No. 2 doubles with Julia Faucett and Kiley Kingen winning by default.

Freshman Tori Parker nearly scored a second team point at No. 3 singles, battling through a three-set loss.

Golf

Cougars sink Golden Bears

The Greenfield-Central boys golf team bested Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Shelbyville, 176-181, Tuesday night.

Senior Matt Kaser earned match medalist honors with a 40. Bryce Hasty carded a 44, while Tyler Young and Josh Alley both fired a 46.

The Cougars travel to the Player’s Club in Yorktown on Saturday to compete in the HHC tournament at 10 a.m.

Dragons win three-way

The New Palestine boys golf team won a three-way match Tuesday at Tri-County Golf Club, shooting 160 to beat host Shenandoah (182) and Eastern Hancock (190).

Matt Barada was medalist with a 38. Sammy Chifalo shot a 39, Gus Walling added a 41, and A.J. Williams a 42. Evan Griffith’s 46 was the fifth score.

Baseball

Dragons win in extras

The New Palestine baseball team rallied in the top of the sixth to send the game to extra innings, then scored twice in the ninth, Tuesday, to beat host Pendleton Heights 4-3.

The Dragons improved to 10-11 on the season and 5-5 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.

Eli Bruns pitched 8.0 innings, allowing one earned run, five hits and striking out five to get the win. Christian Deckard got the save, with two strikeouts in the ninth.

New Palestine trailed 2-0 after the Arabians scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the sixth, Zayden Stiller and Maddox Manes hit one-out singles and advanced when Wes Stiller walked to load the bases. The first two runners scored on an error to tie the game. New Palestine couldn’t plate the go-ahead run, as Pendleton Heights induced back-to-back strikeouts.

Bruns pitched around a one-out single in the seventh to send the game into extras and a two-out walk in the eighth to keep the score tied 2-2.

In the ninth, Kaiden Kirkwood led off with a single and advanced to second on Bruns’ sacrifice bunt. Reise Quillen followed with a hit and a Carter Stogsdill walk to load the bases. Kirkwood scored on a wild pitch, while Quillen came home on Zayden Stiller’s sacrifice fly.

Brendan Tabor was 2-for-4 to lead the Dragons’ six-hit attack. Manes, Kirkwood and Quillen all singled and scored. Stogsdill had the Dragons’ other hit.
