PREP ROUNDUP: No. 17 Marauders get back on track

MUNCIE — The Class 4A No. 17 Mt. Vernon Marauders had their nine-game winning streak come to an end last week, but they’ve already turned the page.

After losing to 4A No. 4 New Palestine on the road this past Thursday, 3-1, the Marauders run ruled Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Delta, 14-2, in five innings on Monday.

The road win improved the Marauders’ HHC record to 3-1 and 10-2 overall.

The Marauders built a 7-0 lead after the top of the second inning and added seven more runs in the fifth to secure the program’s sixth victory by run rule this season.

Mt. Vernon hosts Lapel today before welcoming Fishers on Thursday night. The Marauders next HHC matchup is Friday night at home against rival Greenfield-Central (10-2, 1-0 HHC).

Royals in Quarantine

The Class 2A No. 8 Eastern Hancock softball team has been placed in a 10-day COVID-19 contact tracing quarantine.

Due to the quarantine, the Royals’ home game against 2A No. 6 Alexandria, which was scheduled for Monday, was postponed. No makeup date has been announced.

The Royals were riding an 11-game winning streak entering Monday and are 11-1 on the season with a 3-0 Mid-Eastern Conference record.

The team has hit a season-record 21 home runs with a team batting average of .435 and 158 runs scored in 12 games.

Dragons win a pair at home

The New Palestine softball team improved to 12-0 on the season Saturday with a pair of home victories.

The Dragons beat Decatur Central 3-0 to open the day, then walloped Seymour 11-1 in six innings in the nightcap.

The Decatur Central game featured two recent state champions meeting on the diamond. Sam Booe pitched a gem, scattering four hits in the shutout. She struck out seven Hawks.

Allie Blum got the Dragons on the board with a two-run triple in the second. Lexi Campbell followed with a solo homer in the fourth. Aglaia Rudd doubled, while Delaney Barton and Kinsey Mitchell each singled to pace a six-hit Dragon attack.

In the second game, Seymour’s first two batters singled, leading to a run, but then Katie Kottlowski retired the next 18 Owls in order. She struck out four in the complete game victory.

The Dragons blasted five extra-base hits in the contest, including Kendal Calbert’s three-run homer in the first that gave New Palestine a 4-0 lead. Barton hit a two-run double in the fifth to push the lead to 8-1. Campbell hit two doubles and Alaina Miller roped a triple.

Mitchell was 2-for-4 2. Campbell was 3-for-3. Calvert drove in four runs in the contest. Grace Paquette and Allie Blum each had a hit and an RBI. Aglaia Rudd and Barton each had a hit and two RBI, as the Dragons outhit Seymour 10-2.

Cougars crush Red Devils

The Greenfield-Central softball team logged 22 hits en route to a 27-6 run-rule victory over visiting Richmond on Friday.

The win marked the Cougars fourth straight and improved their season record to 10-2 overall.

A total of 10 players had at least one hit, led by Caroline Gibson’s six-RBI night. Gibson finished 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two doubles.

Greenfield-Central had seven doubles, a triple by Camille Burelison and a trio of home runs from Ella Redmon, Ellie Ewald and Hannah Holden.

Redmon was 4-for-5 with four RBI and two doubles. Lilly Stewart finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and a pair of doubles. Megan Wineinger was 2-for-4 with a double.

Burelison went 2-for-2 with three RBI, Ewald was 2-for-3 with three RBI, Holden finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and Mallorie Fultz was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Teegan Parsons and Emmie Lamaster both had singles.

Holden picked up the win, pitching 4.0 innings with six strikeouts and three earned runs charged against her.

Baseball

Dragons fall to Flashes

The New Palestine baseball team dropped an 8-2 decision Saturday at Franklin Central.

The Dragons had four hits — a double from Wes Stiller and singles by Carter Stogsdill, Eli Bruns and Reise Quillen.

The Dragons (4-7) fell behind 4-0 before plating a run in the fourth when Bruns singled and scored on a wild pitch. NP added another run in the top of the seventh when Stiller led off with a double and scored on an error.

Track and Field

Cougars take second at Guerin

The Greenfield-Central girls track and field team tallied 162.5 points to finish second behind host Guerin Catholic (174) at the Golden Eagles Invitational in Noblesville on Friday.

Hamilton Heights was third (97.5) and Eastern Hancock was fourth (86).

The Cougars competed in two separate meets Friday night.

Audrey Brinkruff competed at the Carmel Distance Showcase in the 3,200-meter run where ran a new personal-best time of 11:23, which also cut 20 seconds off the school record in that event. Audrey placed 23rd out of over 60 runners.

The remaining Cougars competed at the Guerin Catholic Invitational.

Kayana Maroska was part of four winning events, sweeping both hurdle races, took first place in the 200-meter and anchored the winning 1,600 relay team.

Addie Hill, Audrey Pechin and Reagan Crouch were also part of the 400 relay team, which dropped four seconds from their previous best time of the year.

Savannah Lake won the 100-meter dash and also placed second in the 200.

Crouch placed second in high jump and third in both hurdle races. Lindsey McCord placed fourth in the 100. Emma Bogle grabbed fourth in the 3,200.

Gia Valenzano was third in the 800. In the long jump, Ava Grass placed third and Lilli Barnard was fourth. Betsy Underwood was third in pole vault with Grass in fourth.

In the throws, Lauren Silcox was fourth in Shot Put. Hill was third in the 400.

Cougars boys finish fourth

The Greenfield-Central boys track and field team scored 86.5 team points for fourth at the Guerin Catholic Invitational on Friday.

Pike won the meet with a 161, followed by Guerin Catholic at 117.5 and Eastern Hancock in third with 100.5.

Cody Hargett won the pole vault competition by clearing a height of 13-feet.

Jacob Presser, Masan Kojima, Austin Nigh and Gage Guenin teams to take second in the 3,200 relay in a time of 8:54. Presser was second in the 3,200 at 10:36.

Lucus Tutrow placed third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:51.
