Prep Roundup: Dragons fall to Warriors in slugfest

NEW PALESTINE — The New Palestine baseball team plated eight first-inning runs, but Whiteland rallied Monday to beat the Dragons 11-10 at New Palestine High School.

Whiteland broke a 10-10 tie in the sixth on a walk and a two-out double. The Dragons had a baserunner in each of the next two innings, but were unable to drive in the equalizer.

After falling behind 4-0 in the first, the Dragons exploded in the bottom of the inning for eight runs on three homers.

Brendan Tabor hit a two-run homer to get New Palestine on the board. After singles by Zayden Stiller and Maddox Manes, Caleb Davis homered to left to give the Dragons a 5-4 lead.

After another pair of singles, Carter Stogsdill hit a three-run blast to center to extend the lead to 8-4.

After Whiteland scored three times in the second, the Dragons added two more runs in the third when Stogsdill singled and scored on a single by Kaiden Kirkwood, who would later score on a wild pitch.

Whiteland again rallied with three runs in the fourth to tie the game.

Manes led a 12-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with a run. Stogsdill was 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Kirkwood, Tabor, Davis, Eli Bruns and Nolan Cox also had hits for New Palestine.

Golf

Dragons topple Tigers

The New Palestine golf team beat Triton Central 181-211 Monday at Hawk’s Tail.

Braeden Baker led the Dragons with a 44. Matt Barada shot 45, Evan Griffith and Gus Walling each shot 46 and Sammy Chifalo added a 47.

Cougars win tri-meet

The Greenfield-Central boys golf team tallied a 188 at Hawk’s Tail G.C. to defeat both Anderson and Morristown on Monday.

The Cougars improved to 3-2 on the season. The team was led by freshman Tyler Young with a 45. Seniors Averell Wooten-Brown and Tyler Osborn both shot 47s. Sophomore Caleb Means had a 49 to round out the team scoring.

On Saturday, the Cougars placed 12th out of 21 teams during the Danville Invitational at Twin Bridges Golf Course.

Sophomore Josh Alley posted the Cougars’ lowest score with a 90.

Tennis

Cougars best Warriors

The Greenfield-Central girls tennis team improved its season record to 2-2 with a 4-1 victory over host Warren Central on Monday.

Brianna McConnell won at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-4. Jaclyn Layton scored a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.

Ali Knecht and Hallie Smith won at No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-0 for the Cougars. At No. 2 doubles, Makayla Price and Leah Puckett won 6-3, 6-1.

Royals sweep Jets

The Eastern Hancock girls tennis team defeated Anderson Prep Academy 5-0 at home on Monday.

The Royals improved their season record to 4-1.

Savanah Hardin won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Lexi Swauger was victorious at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0. Lilly Richmond earned the match’s final point at No. 3 singles.

Tori Parker and Audrey Tice cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Kalyn Edwards and Mikayla Hardy won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

On Saturday, the Royals placed second at their own invitational with 21 points. Jay County won the event with 22 points. Blue River Valley was third at 17. Seton Catholic finished fourth.

Swauger won the invitational championship at No. 3 singles, defeating Jay County 6-3, 6-1 and Blue River Valley 6-2, 6-1.
