Freeze watch and light snow on the horizon

GREENFIELD — Hancock County is under a freeze watch for the next two nights as unseasonably cool temperatures — and a threat of snow — settle over the area.

With low temperatures expected near 30 degrees tonight (Tuesday, April 20) and Wednesday, tender plants may be at risk from freeze damage. Experts recommend covering vulnerable plants with bed sheets, blankets or upside-down garden pots. Overturned cardboard boxes can work as well. With wind gusts up to 25 mph expected, covers may need to be anchored. They should be removed once the temperature rises in the morning.

The predicted low temperature each of the next two nights will threaten records, but plant-threatening cold isn’t all that unusual. According to the National Weather Service, the normal date for the final spring freeze in Hancock County is around April 18. Last year, freezes occurred in May, causing widespread damage.

Complicating the forecast is the threat of snow tonight and Wednesday morning when the temperature drops below freezing. Only light accumulation is expected.
