Prep Roundup: Dragons girls track team wins tri-meet

GREENWOOD — The New Palestine girls track and field team won a triangular meet Thursday at Greenwood. The Dragons tallied 75 points, beating Perry Meridian (46) and Greenwood (44).

The Dragons won 11 events in the meet.

Individual winners for New Palestine were: Sydney Miller in discus, Faith Hensel in shot put, Kennedy Garrett in long jump, Taylor Kelley in the 100-meter dash, Lexi Baynes in the 200, Emily Adam in the 800-meter run, Emma Mann in the 1,600 and Brenna Shaw in the 3,200.

The Dragons also swept the relays. Baynes, Kendall Mann, Megan Collins and Shaw won the 3,200. Maya Hobbs, Garrett, Baynes and Kelley won the 400. Adam, Anne Bauer, Kelley and Baynes won the 1,600.

The Dragon boys finished third with 36.5 points. Perry Meridian tallied 69.5 and Greenwood 61.

Wes Jewell won the 400 and Damon Hockett the high jump.

Cougars breeze to victory

The Greenfield-Central boys track and field team scored in every event and won seven overall on Tuesday night to best Hoosier Heritage Conference foe New Castle and visiting Scecina Memorial.

The host Cougars scored 76 team points to win the tri-meet.

Individual event winners were: Michael Runions (800, 2:12), Griffen Wheeler (3,200, 10:10), Jacob Holman (long jump, 19-05.00) and Cody Hargett (pole vault, 14-00.00).

Jacob Presser, Lucus Tutrow, Masan Kojima and Wheeler won the 3,200-meter relay in 8:44. Ian Jack, Logan Stoeffler, Logan Masters and Runions won the 1,600 relay. Holman, Aaron Lee, Cash Looper and Runions won the 400 relay in 3:43.

The Cougars had six runner-up finishes, eight third-place scorers and were fourth in seven events.

Tennis

Royals win second straight

The Eastern Hancock girls tennis team improved to 3-1 on the season with a pair of wins this week.

The Royals swept past New Castle 5-0 at home on Wednesday before defeating host Rushville 5-0 on Thursday.

EH senior Chloe McCarty won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles on Thursday. Freshman Savanah Hardin was victorious at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Lexi Swauger won 6-2, 6-2 to sweep the Royals’ singles matches.

Seniors Kalyn Edwards and Lilly Richmond won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Junior Audrey Tice and freshman Mikayla Hardy teamed to win at No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-1.

Against New Castle, Hardin moved to No. 1 singles to win 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, while McCarty won at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1. Swauger rolled 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Edwards and Richmond earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory, while Tice and Hardy won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Dragons fall to Panthers

The New Palestine girls tennis team was competitive in each match Thursday, but fell 5-0 at home to No. 1 Park Tudor.

Abby Blachly and Olivia Hasenkamp played top opponents in their matches and both fell 6-0, 6-0. Courtney Johnson dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 3 singles. At doubles, both Lucy Miller/Mia Knoop and Natalee Russell/Lily Haeberle fell 6-2, 6-2.

Golf

New Pal beats Knightstown

The New Palestine boys golf team beat Knightstown Thursday in the Dragons’ home opener at The Links.

The Dragons Red team won the match with a 186. Gus Walling was low medalist with a 43. Sammy Chifalo shot 46, Evan Griffith 48 and A.J. Williams 49.

The Dragons White team shot 211, led by Landon Beaty’s 48 and Nick Barada’s 49.

Knightstown shot 232.

Baseball

Royals fall to Raiders

The Eastern Hancock baseball team lost to rival Shenandoah, 12-2, in six innings on Thursday night.

The loss dropped the Royals’ season record to 3-3 and 1-1 in the Mid-Eastern Conference.

The Royals posted four hits against the Raiders and drew three walks as Shenandoah starter Blake Surface went 5.0 innings with eight strikeouts, three walks and two runs allowed.

Eastern Hancock’s hits were recorded by Brandon Ridgway, Cameron Wise, Landon Kintner and Drew White. Caden Hancock and White scored both runs for the Royals.

Marauders split HHC series

The Mt. Vernon baseball team bounced back from its first Hoosier Heritage Conference on Tuesday against Shelbyville with a 10-0 shutout on Thursday.

The Marauders (7-2, 3-1 HHC) used a seven-hit, seven-walk attack to split their HHC series on the road with Shelbyville, including a double by Joel Walton (1-for-3, two runs).

Eli Bridenthal went 2-for-2 for the Marauders, while Hunter Dobbins was 2-for-3. Bryce Miller, Landon Clark, Walton and Nate Weaver (sac RBI) each drove in one run apiece.

The host Golden Bears committed four errors to help the Marauders’ cause.

Senior AJ Swingle picked up the complete-game victory on the mound, going 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts, two walks and five hits allowed.
