HANCOCK COUNTY — A traffic stop for unsafe driving led officials to charge an Indianapolis man with multiple crimes, including a Level 4 felony count of possession of methamphetamine.

David R. Morgan, 40, 1300 block of South Sheffield Avenue, is facing six charges in all. He also was charged with a Level 6 felony count of unlawful possession of a syringe and four misdemeanor drug and vehicle violation charges. The most serious charge against Morgan carries a sentence of up to 12 years in prison.

A probable cause affidavit stated Morgan was sitting in his vehicle stopped east of the intersection of U.S. 52 and County Road 700W on Jan. 30 when officers arrived after receiving a complaint that a vehicle had almost hit another motorist.

Officers determined Morgan was under the influence. Morgan thought he was somewhere in Indianapolis, the affidavit said. Field sobriety tests were performed but had to be stopped because Morgan could not maintain his balance, the affidavit said.

During a search of his vehicle, officers found a plastic bag containing a crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine as well as pills identified as a controlled substance.

Morgan had an initial appearance on Wednesday, April 7, where no additional bond was set. A pretrial conference was scheduled for May.
