CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Eastern Hancock softball team came off a near two-week break and picked up right where it left off.
The Royals run-ruled Hagerstown, 20-0, in five innings on March 24 at home. On Tuesday, they posted their second run-rule, five-inning victory of the season over visiting Triton Central, 17-0.
The host Royals (2-1) posted 14 hits overall and built a 7-0 lead after the second inning before scoring 10 more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Sammie Bolding led the hit parade, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a stolen base and five RBI. Bolding laced a pair of doubles for two of the Royals’ five two-baggers in the game.
Grace Stapleton finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double, a stolen base and a home run. Caroline Stapleton went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a triple and two stolen bases.
Kaylee Stewart was 1-for-1 with four runs scored, an RBI, a stolen base and a double. Brooklyn Willis went 2-for-2, with three RBI, two runs scored and a home run.
Kaylee Kline was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a double. Emma Bolding logged two stolen bases.
Maddie Turner picked up the win in the circle, pitching 5.0 complete innings with one hit allowed and 13 strikeouts.
Marauders cruise past Scecina
The Mt. Vernon softball team run ruled visiting Scecina 23-0 in five innings at home on Tuesday night.
The Marauders took a 5-0 lead after the first inning and scored 13 runs in the bottom of the second en route to a 2-1 record on the season.
Mt. Vernon posted 22 hits to back starting pitcher Maddie Taylor’s complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts. Taylor finished 4-for-5 at the plate and also hit a three-run triple in the first inning for four RBI total.
Easton Wampler went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double and six RBI. Drew Fithian was 3-for-4 with five RBI and a home run.
Mia Robbins went 1-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI with a home run. Molly Buck had the Marauders’ fifth home run of the game, going 2-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBI.
Riley Hasseld was 3-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a double. Macy Cox hit a double and finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Allison Myers was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
The Marauders return to the diamond on Saturday for a home doubleheader against Indianapolis Lutheran, beginning at 11 a.m.
Cougars remain perfect at 4-0
The Greenfield-Central softball team kept its winning streak going Tuesday night, run-ruling host Centerville, 18-0, in five innings.
The victory improved the Cougars’ season record to 4-0.
Camille Burelison paced the Cougars’ 18-hit attack by going 2-for-4 with six RBI and two home runs. Lily Stewart clubbed a home run and drove in three runs by going 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
Ellie Ewald went 3-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a double. Mallory Fultz was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Megan Wineinger went 4-for-6 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Morgan Hornaday was 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Olivia Roberts finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Burelison was credited with the pitching win with five strikeouts and no hits allowed over 3.0 innings.
Baseball
Dragons drop season opener
The New Palestine baseball team dropped its season opener Tuesday at Shelbyville, 10-3.
Carter Stogsdill led off the season with a home run on the third pitch of the year, but the host Golden Bears responded with three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-1 lead.
In the seventh, Wes Stiller had a sacrifice fly and Nolan Cox an RBI double to add two more runs for the Dragons.
Stogsdill, Zayen Stiller, Maddox Manes and Cox had the Dragons’ four hits, as New Palestine was outhit 10-4.
Cougars win HHC opener
The Greenfield-Central baseball team rallied back from a 2-0 deficit Tuesday night to win its Hoosier Heritage Conference opener 12-3 over New Castle.
The visiting Cougars trailed 2-1 after four complete innings before turning the tide with a seven-run top of the fifth. Greenfield-Central added four more runs in the sixth to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Gavin Atwood, Grant Shepherd and Lance McKee each had two hits in the win. Conner Sims, AJ Oden and Atwood added two RBI apiece.
Track & Field
Marauders challenge Tigers
The Mt. Vernon girls track & field team competed well in its first home meet of the season Tuesday night against Yorktown.
The Marauders elected to run several girls in atypical events in order to gain experience. Unfortunately, the strategy backfired in the end as Yorktown was able to win 68-64 overall by securing a victory in the 1,600-meter relay, winning the meet by 4 points.
Mt. Vernon’s individual event winners included: Riley Nielsen (pole vault), Raelyn Stanfield (high jump), Mya Eppert (100-meter dash and 200), Morgan Tharp (1,600-meter run and 800), Anna Stanfield (300 hurdles) and Lydia Carrell (3,200).
The 3,200-meter relay team of Carrell, Alex Overshiner, Mindy Cornelius and Allie Jenson won for the Marauders.
Kaylee Taylor was third in the discus, while Jayla Tremble took second in the event. Anna Stanfield was third in the 100 hurdles behind runner-up Raelyn Stanfield.
Emma Gasiorek was second in the 400 with Overshiner taking third. Raelyn Stanfield was second in the 300 hurdles. Annelise Hiner placed third in the 800, and Jenson was third in the 3,200. Anaiah Garrett placed third in the 200.
