Greenfield man gets 4 years in jail drug-smuggling case

HANCOCK COUNTY — One of the inmates who was accused of trying to smuggle drugs into the county jail had his cased settled last week in Hancock County Superior Court 1, and he received a four-year prison term.

Matthew Scott Norman, 32, Greenfield, pleaded guilty to a Level 5 felony count of conspiracy to commit trafficking with an inmate; two other Level 5 felony charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement.

According to court records, Judge D.J. Davis sentenced Norman on Wednesday, March 31, to four years in the Indiana Department of Corrections.The sentence calls for three years to be served and one year suspended to probation. The sentencing includes a statement saying Norman may petition for modification after one year is served upon successful completion of a Recovery While Incarcerated program.

Norman, along with Grant Hoefener, 34, Greenfield was accused of trying to sneak drugs via letters and photographs into the county jail in October 2019. According to court records, the trafficking case against Hoefener has yet to be settled.

Hoefener is currently listed as an inmate in the Putnamville Correctional Facility after he was sentenced for a parole violation for other drug crimes in the county. He is not scheduled to be released from prison on those charges until March 2023.
