Warming center available as refuge from cold

HANCOCK COUNTY — With another round of bitter cold temperatures expected this weekend and into next week, county officials want to remind those who might need shelter that Hancock Hope House is still available as an emergency warming center.

Hope House, the county’s homeless shelter, made itself available for emergency shelter last week, but no one has come to stay so far, executive director Andrea Mallory said.

People interested in seeking refuge may go to Hope House, 35 E. Pierson St., where a background check will be required for those seeking to stay. The background check takes about 30 minutes.

More information about the warming center is available on the website of Hancock County Community Organizations Active in Disaster: www.hancockcoad.org.

Highs this weekend and next week will struggle to make it into the low 20s, with the lows expected to be in the single digits to below zero. Coupled with wind chills, the next seven to 10 days will be dangerously cold, the National Weather Service said.
