Tyrell White now has a total bond of $175,000.

HANCOCK COUNTY — The inmate who escaped over two weeks ago while on an outside work detail at the Hancock County Jail is back in custody.

Law enforcement caught up with Tyrell Deshawn White, 22, Indianapolis, and arrested him Wednesday, Jan. 26, some 16 days after he took off running from the back of the jail and eluded pursuers before jumping into a waiting car.

Hancock County sheriff’s deputies, with assistance from the Indiana State Police, located and apprehended White in Indianapolis. He was found in the area of 30th Street and Graham Avenue on the city’s east side.

Investigators had been pursuing leads on White’s whereabouts ever since he escaped on Jan. 10.

White took off as police closed in on Wednesday, but officers were able to chase him down without incident.

White is back in the Hancock County Jail, and his bond has been revoked. He now also faces a Level 5 felony count of escape. White already had been facing several charges, including a Level 4 felony count of unlawful possession of a firearm by felon.

Authorities in Marion County also have charged him with resisting arrest for running from police on Wednesday, said Maj. Bobby Campbell, chief deputy of the sheriff’s department.

White, who officials said had been a model inmate up until the night he ran away, was assigned as one of three inmate workers at the jail who were taking trash out to dump in large bins. The bins are outdoors behind the jail.

According to investigators, White had devised an escape plan with his girlfriend, Titiana Evans, who was waiting a few blocks away with a car to pick him up. White ran south after getting away. Jailers immediately gave chase but lost sight of him as he was running along State Road 9 near Osage Street. He met up with Evans outside Hancock Hope House, 35 E. Pierson St., and they drove to Indianapolis.

Investigators learned about the escape plan when they listened to recordings of phone conversations between White and Evans.

Jail officials have since changed several procedures involving inmate workers. Among other changes, they are no longer allowed to be outdoors on their work details.

Evans, 23, who was arrested the night of the escape, faces a Level 5 felony count of escape and a Level 6 felony count of assisting a criminal. According to court documents, Evans had her bond reduced to $1,000 cash on Wednesday, Jan. 27, by Judge D.J. Davis in Hancock County Superior Court 1. She was no longer listed as an inmate on Wednesday afternoon.
