County reports its 45th COVID-19 death

HANCOCK COUNTY — The Indiana State Department of Health reported Tuesday that a Hancock County resident recently died of COVID-19, raising the county’s death toll from the novel coronavirus to 45.

The person was a man in his 50s who died on Oct. 17, according to the state health department’s online COVID-19 dashboard. It was the county’s first death since Oct. 5.

The latest death was the county’s third in the 50-59 age group. Five of the county’s fatalities were in their 60s, 10 were in their 70s and 27 were in their 80s.

Twenty-three of the county’s fatalities were men and 22 were women.

Also according to data released Tuesday, 129 new COVID-19 tests were administered in Hancock County from Sept. 23 to Oct. 19, raising that total to 27,616. A total of 18,578 individuals have been tested from Hancock County since the pandemic began. Seven new cases on Oct. 19 brought that total to 1,141. The county’s seven-day moving average of positive cases has been declining since an all-time high of 13 for Oct. 15.

Hancock County’s seven-day positivity rate for all tests is 6.2% between Oct. 7 and 13, and the cumulative rate is 4.2%. The seven-day positivity rate for unique individuals Oct. 7 through 13 is 9.8%, and the cumulative rate is 6.1%.

Statewide, 17,654 new COVID-19 tests administered from June 16 to Oct. 19 raised that total to more than 2.5 million. Almost 8,200 new individuals were tested, for a total of almost 1.6 million. Indiana also added 1,551 cases from Oct. 16 to 19 for a total of 150,664. The state’s seven-day positivity rate for all tests between Oct. 7 and 13 is 6.7%, and its cumulative rate is 5.8%. The seven-day positivity rate for unique individuals Oct. 7 through 13 is 12.4%, and the cumulative rate is 9.6%. Forty-eight new deaths raised that total to 3,775.
