Boys Tennis

Royals sweep past Tri

The Eastern Hancock boys tennis team improved its season record to 8-3 with a 5-0 sweep of Tri on Tuesday night.

The Royals have won four straight matches, including three by sweep, since finishing fourth at the Hancock County Tournament on Sept. 12.

Prior to their win over Tri, Eastern Hancock scored 5-0 victories against Mid-Eastern foe Blue River Valley on Sept. 16 and Morristown last Thursday. They also added a 4-1 win over Frankton on Sept. 14.

On Wednesday, the 2020 MEC tournament runner-ups went on the attack, led by a pair of flawless victories.

Kodey Huff won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Bryce Wennen and Wyatt Sutton also rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Nolan Stout won at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-1. Nate Cape and Peyton Stephens prevailed at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-1. Zeke Dixon won by default at No. 2 singles.

The Royals host rival Knightstown on Thursday before hosting the Eastern Hancock Invitational on Saturday. The team concludes the regular season on Tuesday at home against Pendleton Heights.

Boys Soccer

Dragons fall to Wildcats

The New Palestine boys soccer team traveled to Lawrence North on Tuesday night and dropped a 5-1 decision.

The Dragons are now 2-10 on the season and return home tonight when they play host to the Fishers Tigers.

Marauders deadlock with Bears

The Mt. Vernon boys soccer team rallied back with a strong second half to tie visiting Lawrence Central 2-2 on Tuesday night.

Mt. Vernon had a slow start against the Bears in the first half, falling behind 1-0. Lawrence Central capitalized again on a cross pass to make the score 2-0 in the second half, but the Marauders regrouped and upped their intensity down the stretch.

Alex Nielsen was able to get the Marauders on the scoreboard with the team’s first goal off a corner kick from Joseph Knowlton.

A little later, Knowlton assisted Zach Johnson, who capitalized on a 25-yard shot to draw Mt. Vernon even 2-2.

Mt. Vernon continued to pressure and had the momentum in the final minutes but just couldn’t get the necessary go-ahead goal. The game “was one of the gutsier performances MV has shown in recent weeks,” head coach Matt Mayhew remarked.

Mt. Vernon is now 5-7-1 on the season and 3-3 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. The Marauders hosts Pendleton Heights tonight for their final conference game of the season.
