GREENFIELD — Greenfield-Central schools will resume as scheduled on July 30, but that’s about the only thing about the coming school year that will be normal.

The G-C School Board voted unanimously late Monday afternoon, July 6, to pass a school re-entry plan for the 2020-21 school year.

The plan is similar to one announced last week by Southern Hancock schools. G-C’s plan envisions an e-learning program that will be much more structured than the one put in place in the spring. It also calls for strict social distancing guidelines that include wearing masks on buses and limiting movement in the school buildings.

When enrollment opens next week, students can choose whether to attend classes at school or virtually online from home. Virtual learning will require a full semester commitment, according to the plan.

The plan is based in part on feedback from hundreds of parents and staff members, the vast majority of whom support the idea of reopening the schools. More than 80% favor making masks mandatory; for now, they will be required during passing periods, on buses and wherever social distancing isn’t possible.

The board’s vote came at a special meeting Monday. About 15 people attended. A complete story on G-C’s plan will appear in the Wednesday edition of the Daily Reporter.
