GREENFIELD — No one was injured in a house fire in the 1000 block of West Sixth Street Saturday night.

The Greenfield Fire Territory responded to the blaze at around 11 p.m. Fire marshal Brian Lott said most of the flames were in the southwest corner of the house upon firefighters’ arrival. That’s where the kitchen and electrical panel are, he continued, adding a resident reported the house occasionally had electrical issues with appliances like the stove and dryer. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters had the flames out in about 15 minutes, Lott said.

Lott said he was told the house has three tenants and none were reported to have been home at the time of the fire.

The house is heavily damaged, Lott said.

“It’s a small structure, so any size fire in there is going to cause a lot of damage,” he said.

Lott added the house is unlivable and Red Cross would provide shelter for the tenants.

Mike and Lisa Grant said they were driving home after celebrating the Fourth of July at a friend’s when they passed by and saw the house on fire. Mike Grant said flames were 8 to 10 feet above the roof. He called 911 and went up to the house’s front door, which someone else had kicked in in an effort to help. Grant, who is a former firefighter and police officer, said he and two others then entered the house to see if anyone was inside but that no one appeared to be home.
