This story was updated on June 24, 2020, to add a previously recorded novel coronavirus-related death at a Hancock County nursing home that had been omitted from the original version.

HANCOCK COUNTY — Of the county’s 34 novel coronavirus-related deaths, 25 have been residents of long-term care facilities, according to data released Tuesday.

Figures released by the Hancock County Health Department showed that all four of the residents reported to have tested positive for COVID-19 at Traditions at Brookside in McCordsville have died. Indianapolis-based Traditions Management, which oversees Traditions at Brookside, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

The data also added another death of a resident to Greenfield Healthcare Center’s total, raising the amount to 20.

Andrew Clark, executive director of Greenfield Healthcare Center, said that fatality was a resident who was in hospice care before testing positive for COVID-19 and didn’t have any symptoms of the disease. Clark added the resident was able to be moved out of the facility’s COVID-19 unit before dying and questioned whether the novel coronavirus caused the death.

Clark also said Greenfield Healthcare Center’s data showed that a total of 77 residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began, while the county health department’s data reported 76. He said 50 residents have recovered from the disease and six are currently recovering.

The county health department’s data for Woodland Terrace of New Palestine did not change. Two residents of that facility have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began, one of whom died.

The Indiana State Department of Health added one COVID-19 death to Hancock County’s total Tuesday, raising the number to 34. According to the department’s online coronavirus dashboard, the fatality was a man age 80 or older who died on June 19.

Twenty-four of the county’s coronavirus-related fatalities were 80 or older, six were in their 70s, three in their 60s and one in their 50s. The gender breakdown as of Tuesday was split evenly at 17.

The state reported Tuesday that 392 Hancock County residents are known to have tested positive for COVID-19, one fewer than the total reported Monday. The state department of health has reported in the past that sometimes figures have to be corrected.

A total of 5,338 COVID-19 tests were recorded to have been performed on Hancock County residents as of Tuesday, the latest 72 of which occurring between May 27 and June 21.

State COVID-19 totals came in at 42,871 cases, 2,377 deaths and 426,376 tests.
